GREEN JUICE

Those of you that follow me on my channel will know I only eat one meal a day between 1pm and 5pm. But I like to start my day with a green juice to ensure I get plenty of vitamins and the bulk of my 5 a day out of the way. Even though I sometimes make a berry smoothie generally it is healthier to stick to veggies as they produce less sugar on juicing. Happy juicing guys !

BENEFITS

The benefits are huge and I could go on for ever but I am sure you have other things to get on with !!! Let me summarise in simple bullet points:

BASIC INGREDIENTS

I used to use spinach but there have been some warnings about unhealthy amounts of cadmium levels but I am investigating this and will get back to you with more informed advice.

  • Kale (one of the most nutrient dense foods on the planet)
  • Cucumber (95% water great for hydration)
  • Chia seeds (omega 3,fibre and quality protein)
  • Ginger (anti inflammatory, energy boost)
  • Pineapple (for sweetness, boosts immunity,high anti oxidants)
  • Flaxseed oil (skin health, also a good internal cleanser, healthy hair, fats)
  • Alkalising super green powder ( to reduce acid in the body important to maintain a good ph in the body)
  • Plenty of ice ! ( just tastes better chilled )

Now you can add medicinal properties to your basic recipe e.g. turmeric for arthritis or any sort of inflammation, parsley for water retention, mint for bloating or headaches,cayenne to boost metabolism. Cinnamon for cholesterol. Fennel ( I use as I love the taste) but great for digestion. Garlic to lower blood pressure. Ashwaganda powder great for the menopause. reduces anxiety ,can boost testosterone, an ancient medicinal root.

GYM : WHY YOU MAY NOT BE LOSING WEIGHT

All my life I was a gym bunny on a regular basis but never really lost any wait. Since giving up the gym completely 10 years ago and discovering yoga I have lost two stone and kept the weight off to maintain a healthy size 10. I purposely do not belong to a club I do my yoga at home alone or with an occasional instructor so it is part of a daily lifestyle. At 50+ it is tough anyway to lose weight so exercise needs to be a lifestyle change just move as much as possible but more importantly it is about a healthy diet. So lets look at 12 traps that I fell into while going to the gym and they may resonate with some of you going to the gym regularly but getting fatter !



  • Losing weight is 80% what you eat and only 20% exercise. You may not be burning as many calories as you think you must eat less calories.
  • The reward factor. after a heavy workout you may feel “I deserve” a cake or a large latte. Lunch with friends maybe an extra glass of wine. Most gyms have cafes these were lethal for me to head there straight after with my friends.
  • Refuelling with carbs post workout like athletes do except……we are not athletes are we ?
  • Sports drinks are usually on sale at gyms. Manufacturers convince us we need these . We don’t. They are highly calorific and full of sugar. Water will do.
  • On the subject of water drink loads during and after working out as we sometimes mistake thirst for hunger . Dehydration can make us reach for sugary snacks.
  • Do not eat before a workout go when hungry. Insulin will stop the mobilisation of fat.
  • Drink black coffee before a workout it acts as a stimulant. The caffeine releases adrenaline hormones. I have always found my workouts easier with black coffee taken beforehand. Also it surprises the appetite AND no calories.
  • Mix up your workout to trick muscle memory. Doing the same routine every workout your muscles remember and it gets easier for them.
  • Quick 30 minute short bursts of activity won’t get your appetite raging. Endurance training makes you hungrier. By the end of a marathon there is also a huge appetite.
  • Learn to like the feeling of being hungry ! That is when you know you are in deficit and you are fat burning.
  • Eating healthy does not mean you can have twice as much or over indulge. Many healthy foods are calorie laden e.g. avocados,nuts,smoothies,protein bars, wholemeal bread.
  • Studies have shown that many people with a strict exercise routine move less throughout the rest of the day. So it is no good if you go to the gym every day for an hour but don’t move for 23 hours !!

I hope this will help you to avoid some pitfalls around your workout. Maybe you recognised one or two (or even 3 or 4 ??) to answer the question why you are working so hard and not losing weight. Lets kickstart that weightloss today !!!!!

TRAVEL: ROME IN 24 HOURS

HAPPY Birthday to me ! I was lucky enough to be taken to Rome for dinner on my birthday to one of my favourite restaurants. Sometimes as you get older we need to throw caution to the wind and embrace adventure. At this age we are able to be more spontaneous. Now most people would not do a travel guide in less than 48 hours but 24 hours allows you to shoot off without too much planning or even booking time off work ! So lets do it !!

Firstly im assuming by your fifties most of you reading this would have visited the tourist sites of this eternal city. So there will be no queueing for the coliseum (although they now do a moonlight tour..) or visits to the Trevi Fountain or Pantheon. If you haven’t seen these then AUGUST is NOT the time to do it !!! So this is my 24 hours……………..

ARRIVE 2.30pm ( I never do early morning flights !!)

Our Chauffeur (BLACKLANE) takes us to the Hotel de La Ville located at the top of the Spanish Steps. I love to stay around this area personally there are many choices to suit all budgets here and along the VIA VENETO. a beautiful spa and rooftop bar overlooking the city. No need to spend time unpacking the beauty of a one day stay ! so head to the spa for a massage to prepare me for the evening.

SPANISH STEPS

5.30pm

A lovely evening stroll down the Spanish Steps (low heels only girls) and into PIAZZA DE SPAGNA. Great buzz on a warm balmy evening. Continue along the VIA CONDOTTI one of the most fashionable and stylish streets in Rome. Window shopping or otherwise ! Gucci, Hermes, Dolce and Gabbana, Harry Winston you name it they are all here .

7.30pm

ZUMA

Arrive at ZUMA , one of my favourite restaurants located in FENDI SQUARE. Head straight in the elevator to the rooftop terrace for a RHUBABU a rhubarb infused sake and vodka martini cocktail. Views across Rome.

8.30pm

Head down to the restaurant. Booking is absolutely advised. Whether in London, Dubai, Hong Kong, Miami or Rome the menu and format is never strays to far. We order my favourite dishes Tuna Tartare, Shrimp tempura , jumbo shrimp (the size of a lobster in its shell !!) spicy beef tenderloin and a selection of sushi. The food has to be tried to be believed please everyone just go at least once it never disappoints. Phenomenal !!

8.30am

Don my trainers and shorts for a brisk morning power walk along the VIA VENETO and down through PIAZZA DE SPAGNA a useful way of avoiding the thousands of steps. End up at CAFE VITTI in PIAZZA di SAN LORENZO a quiet , picturesque square with the best breakfast menu. Italian for 8E or an American breakfast for 20E if you want to go all out.

After changing into our lunch attire and checking out of the hotel we leave our small amount of hand luggage with the concierge and head to an art gallery before lunch.

Now there are obviously many art galleries in Rome but not many people have heard of the VILLA AURORA on VIA LOMBARDIA. A spectacular 16th century villa full of art. Once one of the most spectacular gardens in Rome. This Villa has the only painting that Caravaggio executed on a ceiling ! A private visit can be organised by your concierge but needs to be booked in advance.

If we are going to make our flight we opt for an early lunch. We discover a fabulous restaurant away from the busy crowds close to the art gallery IL PICCOLO MONDO on VIA AURORA I do not hesitate in sharing this little gem with you. Freshly made pasta and market fish of the day. Reasonable prices and great service very relaxing. We dined on lobster pasta and beautifully fresh sea bass grilled.

After a few more glasses of wine and complimentary limoncellos we enjoy a sleepy one hour journey back to the airport where prior to boarding we find time for a “dry flotation tank” why have I never seen one of these in UK?? Fabulously relaxing and a perfect way to end our whirlwind 24 hours in ROME.

Now, I don’t want to tell you which colours to wear or drag you kicking and screaming away from black, our security colour. But choosing the right colour for your complexion, hair and eye colour can instantly make you pop. It will be flattering, you will glow and I promise you can take years off your age. So Colour comes first for any client that engages my service. I have challenged this myself by wearing black with friends who will tell me I look tired but when I change to a brown top (i’m an Autumn) ON THE SAME DAY with no freshening up of make up I get so many more compliments.

The best way of ascertaining your colour palette is to visit a fully trained stylist. But if you cannot afford to do this I will take you through some general rules for you to work out your own colour. Many women instinctively are drawn to their correct colour but MANY are not.

Colour becomes more important as you get older but your colour NEVER changes throughout your lifetime even if you dye your hair, get a tan etc.

This week I attended two new venue openings, pre birthday girly lunch and the Shergar Cup at Ascot Races.

URBAN RETREAT at THE WHITE HOUSE opened its doors this week with a fabulous party. URBAN RETREAT previously located within Harrods has now opened on a site 2-4 Hans Crescent Knightsbridge. Five storeys full of beauty treatment rooms, nail bar,hair salon, bars and restaurant. One giant playroom to spend the day with the girls …or boys.

Hake with Mussels and Chorizo

Piccolinos Virginia Water was the venue for my girly pre birthday lunch this week. A firm favourite and a regular at this superb Italian restaurant . Pepe and his amazing team always ensure great food and service. A massive retractable roof rather like the one on Centre Court at Wimbledon so open air dining always makes me feel I am on holiday. DJ play great tunes Friday and Saturday. Great place for al fresco lunch with the girls. I recommend the seafood risotto !! Definitely on the STYLE LIST .

Birthday Aperitifs

BE Lounge Kensington was the second launch in London this week on the same evening but thankfully around the corner from Urban Retreat. Opposite the Natural History Museum so you can indulge in some art in the same afternoon. I would definitely come here for coffee and pastries and there ARE some wonderful Arabic pastries. But need a few more visits before it makes the STYLE LIST !!

EXERCISE : BEFORE GETTING OUT OF BED

Gentle stretching exercises before getting out of bed in the morning particularly as you get older to warm up the muscles is imperative. It takes just 5 minutes and the benefits will far outweigh an extra 5 minute sleep. You can actually feel the tiredness being squeezed out of the muscles after being sedentary for so long. At any age you should be doing the Bed Stretch 6. Six exercises holding for 6 seconds on each side.

I promise you that you will move with grace and style as you glide through the day. The mornings you choose to do these exercises you will see a difference in posture and movement instead of leaping out with gusto after not moving for hours.

I have done a video post rather than try to explain in words. You can copy to your phone but in no time this will become second nature and hopefully part of your routine. Try it !! Jojo xxxxx
