There can be no dispute over this one. AMAZON delivered EVERY product I could possibly need and usually in 48 hours. Easy return collection and refund. Always has been a good service but the team and the fantastic delivery couriers rose to the increased demand effortlessly. where would we be without you. Happy for you to pay less tax as you are investing it far more wisely than our Government could to make many peoples lives easier.

Okay so I may be a little late to the party but I discovered EVE LOMS RESCUE PEEL PADS. (£60 for 2 months supply) Using the Lockdown to invest and refresh my skin care routine I use these pads every night to resurface the skin with BH,PHA and AHA gentle acids. a non abrasive approach to exfoliation.It really makes a difference I swear I looked 10 years younger after just one day!!

There has been no place like HOME in 2020. My home has become very Hygge (look it up !) We have all been on a home improvement drive in 2020 to make our homes more comforting and stylish and I have to confess I love being at home and have become somewhat institutionalised.

This award HAS to go to my NEIGHBOURS, for shopping for me, leaving treats on the doorstep, making me laugh on our Whatsapp group. A whole army of heroes each in their own special way. I feel very privileged to live in such an amazing community. Thank you neighbours for giving me a lockdown to remember… for the right reasons and how we all pulled together in a time of crisis. 48 HOURS IN JERSEY-A CULINARY TOUR

****NOTE***** As many of us are dreaming of a quick getaway it may actually happen in the not so distant future so I have decided to republish some of my travel articles for you to stop dreaming and start planning(although I would not book yet). I thought I would start with my Jersey experience especially with the recent REAL HOUSEWIVES OF JERSEY making a recent splash on our screens.

I am a regular visitor to Jersey in the Channel Islands mainly because my parents live there. Perfect for a long weekend away and frequently overlooked as a travel destination. A 40 minute flight away and you can be on some of the best beaches in the world, temperatures typically 5 degrees hotter than the mainland and a whole host of Michelin star restaurants. All this in 9 x 5 miles of island. With all the fresh local produce that Jersey has to offer from the freshest seafood, the creamiest dairy and not forgetting the new potatoes this surely is a foodies dream. So as I have tried and tested most of the restaurants not the island over the years I decided to take my Knightsbridge based foodie friend for a culinary tour of Jersey for 48 hours of the finest food so come along with us !!!

FRIDAY 16.00

Leave from Gatwick. Unfortunately at the time of publishing Jersey still do not fly from Heathrow however this is due to change. But we make it in time for dinner! After settling in at my parents we head out to Mark Jordan On The Beach just a short walk away. We sat outside on the terrace on a warm evening with unparalleled views of the sea and the sun setting across the bay. This restaurant has a Bib Gourmand and was featured in the Tatler Best Restaurant Guide. I always feel if you are close to the sea then you really have to order seafood the saltiness in the air bring out the flavours. All the fish is local and the freshest I have tasted anywhere. I order the Brill with a crab tortellini on a lobster bisque while my guest ordered the whole grilled Plaice with a caper,prawn and cockle butter. Both dishes were outstanding and amazing value at £23 and £27 respectively. I left it up to my dinner guest to order a dessert to share a simply perfect raspberry souffle . Could not fault the food and service here and certainly could not find fault with the view. 10/10

SATURDAY 10.00

After our morning yoga , green juice and copious black coffee . We decide not to ruin our culinary lunch today by having breakfast so we head to nearby Noirmont Point for a brisk bracing walk along the cliffs. It always seems to be windy here so take a sweater. On the south coast of Jersey withfabulous views across the bay and along the coastline. Steeped in history still has several German bunkers and a Martello tower. It is possible to have a local guide give you a tour of the area which is preserved in perpetuity to the men and women of jersey who died in World War 2.

We head to St Brelades bay one of the most beautiful wide beaches on the Island. I could be forgiven for thinking I was in the Caribbean but with its huge empty beach with white sands …..it is better. But before we change into our beachwear we head to our next planned restaurant the infamous OYSTER BOX overlooking the Ocean. Always a “must do” in every Jersey/good food article. Super chic and minimalist interior.The menu could be written for me with lots of tartare, carpaccio, oysters and seafood and a good wine list too. I opted for one of the specials Hake with artichokes and cauliflower gremolata , my guest chose the scallops and pancetta with a pea and mint puree. All paired with a bottle of my favourite rose Chateau Minuty £38 very reasonable. We passed on dessert although the dessert menu was very tempting. But I AM planning on donning the bikini right after lunch. Once again , outstanding. Family owned since 1954 they also own the Crab Shack next door if you want more casual dining. 10/10

Hire a couple of sunbeds for £5 each (£35 each in Cannes !!) and sleep off lunch in the warm September sunshine .

4.00pm

Before organising our transport home we head to L’Horizon to the terrace bar for gin and tonics. A lovely spot overlooking the beach with glass panels to protect you from the wind whilst not spoiling the incredible views. Very cordial here and they ALSO have a great menu for lunch.

We opt for a very healthy clean light supper at my friends fabulous restaurant NUDE FOOD . One based in St Helier but we headed close by to the newly opened NUDE BEACH to check it out. right on the beach at St Aubins the restaurant is as light and clean as the menu. The menus is “light clean and uncomplicated” just how I like it !! We found it kind of refreshing to move away from the Michelin style foods and just have a simple healthy supper. No alcohol is served here. I opted for an Immune Boost (apple,carrot,ginger,turmeric and lemon) to drink £4.20. The Asian Poke bowl full off wonderful asian vegetables and brown rice £9.50, I topped with some grilled halloumi unconventional, I know, but there are no rules. As a clean eater I have always loved their food in St Helier but this new setting by the beach was off the scale ! The closest thing to heaven . Don’t be put off by the Nude Beach sign though you do get to keep your clothes on!!!!

Strolling back along the beach to home without feeling too heavy was great.

SUNDAY 10.00am

Our last day and I decided I wanted my foodie guest to sample another Beach Cafe . So we decide to power walk to the beach at St Peter ( well we have to keep working these calories off). Lovely and quiet and no one on the beach. This is basically a beach shack with a very extensive menu and the best full English Breakfast on the island. As we had another gastronomic lunch to look forward to we had two giant cups of coffee and a Portuguese bacon roll to share.

We board Le Petit Train Jerseys very own little train that accommodate up to 60 people to travel along the coast from Liberation Square St Helier to St Aubins. A 35 minute journey and for £8.50 a great way to see this part of Jersey.

I have two Michelin options for lunch today we opted for Oceans restaurant at The Atlantic Hotel, St Brelade . But a quick mention for Samphire in St Helier formerly known as Ormers. The chef Sean Rankin has since parted ways but already Samphire have earned their Michelin status back. Remains one of my favourites with stunning decor, exceptional food and service and a great Saturday brunch menu until 2 pm. If you are here for longer I would not hesitate to recommend.

Oceans restaurant is located within The Atlantic, listed status as a small luxury Hotel of the world.The sole one in Jersey. Overlooking a beautiful unoccupied swimming pool with further views extending across St Ouens bay. The hotel is up high so makes the views even more impressive. This elegant calm dining room is quiet. We opt for the set menu 2 course for £22.50 and 3 courses for £27.50. Starters of scorched and tartare Mackerel followed by pan fried salmon on a bed of smoked haddock and vegetables was divine. Only the desserts let the meal down with a take on ‘arctic roll’ which did not compete with the £1 one from all good and (otherwise ) supermarkets. Surprising from such an esteemed award winning restaurant.

We continued our exceptional bottle of Gavi down by the pool and as we had brought along our swimwear we lazed the afternoon away in the exceptional surroundings and absorbed the view. A few champagnes later we headed back home to get ready for our flight back to the mainland………. and a week of fasting !

SO LEARN AN INSTRUMENT, STUDIES HAVE SHOWN IT HAS A HUGE VALUE ON MENTAL CAPACITY.
  • PHOTOGRAPHIC COURSE. THERE ARE MANY FREE COURSES ON LINE. I AM STUDYING WITH EOS ONLINE. THIS ALSO ENCOURAGES ME TO GET OUT IN THE FRESH AIR WALKING WITH MY CAMERA TO PUT WHAT I HAVE LEARNED INTO PRACTICE.

FOOD: SOUPS TO FIGHT CORONAVIRUS

Its all about the garlic !

As many of you may still be self isolating and awaiting your vaccines or maybe you are anxious about having the vaccine. So give yourself the best chance by boosting your immunity, I am going to introduce you to three nutritional powerhouse soups. All can be made very quickly , and all can be made from frozen and store cupboard ingredients. The reason I chose these soups………

  • You may be on your own so very little prep required (no chopping and peeling)
  • When you are feeling poorly you sometimes only want soup
  • All the ingredients are good for the immune system and detoxifying the body
  • You can make one big pot for when you feel like a littel throughout the day
  • Soft food so good for sore throats

Many people are stockpiling tinned soups these contain high levels of salt and sugar which can cause inflammation. Important to cut down on sugars and dairy when you have flu symptoms as they can excacerbate mucus in the membranes and inflammation. You need plenty of protein to fight the infection. avoid acidic foods eg tomatoes if you are vomiting .

Ingredients to Stockpile

Your shopping list for all 3 soups:

FROZEN SECTION

BAGS OF: CHOPPED ONIONS/LEAF SPINACH/BUTTERNUT SQUASH/BROAD BEANS/CHICKEN BREASTS

STORE CUPBOARD

JAR OF FRESH GRATED GINGER/CHICKEN STOCK CUBES/TURMERIC POWDER/GHEE/ FRESH GARLIC BULBS(LAST UP TO 6 MONTHS)

ROAST GARLIC SOUP

Serves 3/4

4 whole garlic bulbs

cup of onions

Ghee

Chicken stock

  • Slice across top of each bulb, no need to peel . Drizzle with olive oil. Cover with foil and roast for 40 mins in oven 190 degrees.
  • Melt a tablespoon of ghee and saute the chopped onion
  • Pour in 850ml of chicken stock
  • When garlic nice and soft allow to cool a little then squeeze the garlic out of each bulb into the soup.
  • Add 4 blocks of leaf spinach (optional)
  • Add seasoning ( like WHITE pepper in this one)
  • Blend until smooth

NUTRITIONAL NOTE: I would use onions and garlic as much as possible they are nutritional power houses that fight inflammation. Garlic is good at detoxifying the body is anti bacterial/antibiotic as they contain a chemical called Allicin. It is better to roast the garlic than chop as if you don’t chop/blend finely enough and a piece gets lodged in your intestines you can get garlic poisoning and it is very unpleasant take it from me. I use ghee (clarified butter) as it is tastier than butter but also has the milk part taken out so no lactose.

CHICKEN AND BROAD (FAVA)BEAN SOUP

Serves 3/4

2 cups of frozen broad beans

1 cup of onions

ghee

1 chicken breast

chicken stock

  • Wrap chicken in foil with a little water and seasoning place in oven 180 degrees for 40 minutes. this way it keeps it nice and moist.
  • Saute onions in ghee
  • Add broad beans and saute for a few minutes
  • Add chicken stock and boil for 15 minutes
  • Blend until smooth.
  • Once chicken cooked ( ensure it is cooked thoroughly) flake it into the soup
  • Grind black peppercorns over the top.

NUTRITIONAL NOTES: Broad beans are LOADED with vitamins,minerals,fibre and protein. Impressive health benefits such as improved motor function and immunity. Chicken of course is great for protein and makes this soup more substantial. However if you need a real quick fix just omit the chicken . The Fava soup is great just how it is. Tastes amazing. I have it at least once a week.

BUTTERNUT SQUASH,TURMERIC AND GINGER SOUP

SERVES 3/4

2 Cups of butternut squash

1 tablespoon of ginger

2 teaspoons of turmeric powder

Chicken/veg stock

Add some onions and garlic too if you like and seeds if you want some crunch.

  • Just throw everything in a pot and boil for 15 minutes
  • Blend . Season. That simple.

NUTRITIONAL NOTES: Turmeric is anti inflammatory. Butternut Squash is good for ACE vitamins and B vitamins, calcium ( great if you have cut back on the dairy), magnesium and zinc. It supports the natural function of the immune system.

IF YOU PREFER YOUR SOUPS THICKER/THINNER JUST ADJUST THE STOCK ACCORDINGLY.

SO HOW DO WE BRING AS MUCH LIGHT IN AS POSSIBLE DURING LOCKDOWN. HERE ARE A FEW SIMPLE TIPS YOU CAN DO DAILY.

  • WE ARE OBVIOUSLY SPENDING MORE TIME INDOORS. GET OUTSIDE AT LEAST ONCE A DAY TO SOAK UP NATURAL LIGHT (VITAMIN D) AND FRESH AIR. GO FOR A BRISK WALK IN A BEAUTIFUL PLACE. LOCALLY (ABIDE BY THE CURRENT RULES). ALL OF US NEVER FEEL LIKE EXERCISING BUT PUSH YOURSELF WHEN YOU GET HOME YOU WILL BE VERY GLAD YOU DID. NO ONE EVER REGRETS EXERCISE.
  • IF YOU REALLY ARE ANXIOUS ABOUT GOING ANYWHERE THEN JUST GO INTO YOUR GARDEN OR SPACE BY YOUR HOME AND ROOT YOURSELF TO THE EARTH STRETCH YOUR HANDS UP TO THE SKY AND LET THE LIGHT FILL YOUR BODY.
  • BREATHE. EVEN INDOORS YOU CAN PRACTISE WITH THE BREATH. BREATHE IN THE LIGHT THROUGH YOUR BODY AND EXPEL THE DARK STALE AIR. REPEAT SEVERAL TIMES WITH LONG SLOW BREATHS. AS YOU EHALE BREATHE OUT EVERY LAST DROP OF STALE AIR. READ MY ARTICLE ON THIS BLOG ABOUT THE HAPPY BUDDHA MEDITATION.   • LONGER MEDITATION IS SO IMPORTANT. BUT RIGHT NOW AS YOU MEDITATE TAKE YOURSELF ON HOLIDAY AND FEEL THE HEAT ON YOUR BODY AS YOU BATHE IN THE SUNLIGHT. WE ARE ALL MISSING OUR HOLIDAYS RIGHT NOW. SO WHO WOULDNT WANT TO TAKE THEMSELVES AWAY FOR 30 MINS EVERY DAY.
  • VITAMIN D MOUTH SPRAY. OUR BODIES CREATE VITAMIN D FROM THE SUNLIGHT. BUT AS WE HAVE BEEN INDOORS FOR MOST OF THE YEAR MANY OF US WILL BE DEFICIENT. HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT WITHOUT DIETS

Start Here….Today

The truth is diets DO NOT WORK. Of course we all know by now that it is all about what you put in minus what you expend so we can all do the arithmetic. But you will only lose weight if you adapt your lifestyle permanently. I am not a Doctor although I have studied nutrition extensively, but what I can tell you is that in my fifties I am two stone lighter than in my forties and I maintain a healthy size 8-10 clothing size. So I am proof of the method. The PC brigade will say that your size doesn’t matter and as long as you are happy and I do agree with this, if you are in your twenties. In your fifties and beyond it is important to be an appropriate weight for your build for health reasons and mobility reasons. Also we need less calories as our metabolism gets slower. So let me share with you some of my secrets that work for me that can be inserted very neatly into your everyday life painlessly and watch the pounds drop off !!

Not Bad For An Old Girl
  • BLACK COFFEE. Not only does this boost your metabolism it is also an amazing appetite surpressant. Obviously I don’t want your anxiety levels soaring so limit your intake. I only have decaffeinated after midday and when I feel hungry I just have a tiny espresso cup size. ZERO CALORIES. Ditch the milk (oh, and the caramel syrups )
Black Coffee
  • EATING WINDOW. I only eat between the hours of 12-5pm. This gives your internal organs a chance to rest and reduces any inflammation. Don’t break(the)fast until midday to give your body a chance to burn stored fat. The other end of the day don’t eat food just before sleep not only will it keep you awake as your body is still working hard but you won’t burn the calories. you pretty much can eat normally between these hours as the hours are limited you will eat FAR FEWER calories ! Common sense.
  • MORNING JUICE not before midday. I use my green juice to pack nutrients in. NOT fruit as too calorific. but you choose what works for you but TWO ingredients you must have for fat burning CHIA SEEDS and ASHWAGANDA POWDER. CHIA SEEDS are not only full of protein and Omegas for brain and bone health but they plump up in your body and make you feel full when taken in liquid. ASHWAGANDA ROOT is an ancient medicinal herb and brilliant if you are menopausal . It boosts physical and mental health boosts energy levels and reduces anxiety. It is proven to increase testosterone levels in men but women have testosterone too and can be the difference in weight loss in older women as our testosterone rapidly depletes with age. I personally believe that ASHWAGANDA has made a powerful difference to me.
Green Juice but leave the Apples Out
  • LOVE HUNGER. Learn to love being hungry . When I get that hunger feeling thats when I know the calorie reserve starts being burned. Allow yourself to feel hungry it is a natural state rather than feeling satiated all the time. I have learned to love being hungry.
  • EXCISE THE EXERCISE MYTH. Losing weight is about what you eat not about exercise. if you don’t alter your eating plan you WILL NOT lose weight . To burn off one Mars Bar an 11 stone women would have to walk on a treadmill for nearly two hours JUST DONT EAT THE MARS BAR !! Before you eat anything check out the calorie content then equate it to how much more exercise you have to do to burn it off. I swear the gym made me put on weight as every time I went I would reward myself. I don’t care how hard you work in the gym a cake and a latte afterwards will put you into surplus poundage. Of course I would advocate an active daily lifestyle, but certainly not the punish and reward system of the gym. You will find you bur more calories just adapting your lifestyle to make it active.
  • DRINK LOADS OF WATER. Okay this is old advice but it works. Often when you feel hungry it is pure thirst. drink a glass and see you won’t feel hungry or indeed will eat less. Secondly a hydrated body metabolises food far more effectively.
  • WEIGH YOURSELF EVERY DAY. Now this goes against the expert advice but I honestly would say if you do nothing else on the list do this one. THIS WORKS. It allows you to adjust your eating on a daily basis. If I have eaten out or over indulged and put on pounds it is far easier to adjust your eating plan the following day and lose a few pounds then to be faced with losing a stone or two if you don’t weigh yourself often. This method has genuinely keep my weight stable for 10 years !!!!!!! MONITOR and ACTION CONSISTENTLY KEEPS YOU IN CONTROL.
Step On ! Minimise The Shock
  • GO TO’ LOW CALORIE DISHES . When you need to balance out your week. Have a calorie light but filling day. Soups are a very good example. My fave but simple recipe is Broad Bean soup with shredded chicken. Frozen broad beans, onion, chicken/veg stock boiled and blended. A small packet of roast chicken shredded and stirred through. OMG the best and so satisfying. Or the ayurvedic dish Kitchari with yellow mung beans, brown basmati rice boiled with ground cumin,fennel seeds and coriander seeds. Add your favourite root vegetables parsnip, carrot,celeriac add fresh coriander and toasted whole seeds in ghee for serving. so filling one bowl will keep you full all day.
  • BULK OUT MEALS WITH VEG. Fill half your plate with veg. Occasionally to lose weight quickly I buy M&S Count on us BRAISED BEEF with Swede or any meal UNDER 250 calories but add so much Kale/chard/spinach to it thats all I have for the day !
When You Are Short of Time……it Works !!

Okay now for some surprising secrets………………..

  • DRINK TEQUILA! When I lived in LA Tequila is the drink of choice all the big Hollywood stars drink tequila. Not only is it considered a clean drink but it is known in LA as the metaboliser it burns more calories than the drink actually contains . Taken before a meal can make you feel fuller and thus eat less. High quality 100% agave tequila. But don’t overdo it ! I never knew this before I lived in LA but over there it is common knowledge.
  • USE GHEE TO COOK WITH. Research shows that ghee helps in mobilising fat cells to increase energy burning therefore reducing fat mass and increasing lean body mass. Ghee also contains essential amino acids that can shrink fat cells. This clarified fat tends to be overlooked in Western Culture but the Indian population use it on a daily basis. Tastes good too !!!
  • CBD OIL I know from talking to many of you that many are now taking CBD oil on a regular basis. Its good for many things such as inflammation in the joints, anxiety,insomnia. But many say it burns fat by turning it into brown fat which is easily burned and expelled by the body and reduces appetite. I do use this intermittently and it gives a great nights sleep which I personally think a lot of fat is burned in the sleep mores when we are in a deep sleep that CBD oil results in. But I would recommend this is used sparingly as CBD oil use is still in its early stages and I would advise not to solely depend on this for weight loss but in conjunction with other method outlined above.

I think you will agree none of these are hard to implement into your daily schedule it just is about incorporating modern methods and knowledge. These points are what personally works for me. See what works for you and you could be pounds lighter and looking good for Valentines day !!

MIRROR MIRROR ON THE WALL…………. I am going to ease you gently into 2021 as after all it has been a tough year and an even tougher Christmas period.

So as it is the time of Year for renewals and clear outs , all I want you to do is take a good long look at yourself in the mirror. Really look at that person and acknowledge all your hopes and fears, the challenges you faced in 2020 and maybe continue to face.

Now think about the improvements you want to make this year FOR YOU! Not for everyone else , not for the world. not because society dictates who you should be.

What steps do I need to get me there?

Write all the thoughts that come to you , however random and jot them into your Midweek mantra Journal. From this period of self reflection some goals will be organically defined and not forced. Do it today !

GYM : WHY YOU MAY NOT BE LOSING WEIGHT

All my life I was a gym bunny on a regular basis but never really lost any wait. Since giving up the gym completely 10 years ago and discovering yoga I have lost two stone and kept the weight off to maintain a healthy size 10. I purposely do not belong to a club I do my yoga at home alone or with an occasional instructor so it is part of a daily lifestyle. At 50+ it is tough anyway to lose weight so exercise needs to be a lifestyle change just move as much as possible but more importantly it is about a healthy diet. So lets look at 12 traps that I fell into while going to the gym and they may resonate with some of you going to the gym regularly but getting fatter !



  • Losing weight is 80% what you eat and only 20% exercise. You may not be burning as many calories as you think you must eat less calories.
  • The reward factor. after a heavy workout you may feel “I deserve” a cake or a large latte. Lunch with friends maybe an extra glass of wine. Most gyms have cafes these were lethal for me to head there straight after with my friends.
  • Refuelling with carbs post workout like athletes do except……we are not athletes are we ?
  • Sports drinks are usually on sale at gyms. Manufacturers convince us we need these . We don’t. They are highly calorific and full of sugar. Water will do.
  • On the subject of water drink loads during and after working out as we sometimes mistake thirst for hunger . Dehydration can make us reach for sugary snacks.
  • Do not eat before a workout go when hungry. Insulin will stop the mobilisation of fat.
  • Drink black coffee before a workout it acts as a stimulant. The caffeine releases adrenaline hormones. I have always found my workouts easier with black coffee taken beforehand. Also it surprises the appetite AND no calories.
  • Mix up your workout to trick muscle memory. Doing the same routine every workout your muscles remember and it gets easier for them.
  • Quick 30 minute short bursts of activity won’t get your appetite raging. Endurance training makes you hungrier. By the end of a marathon there is also a huge appetite.
  • Learn to like the feeling of being hungry ! That is when you know you are in deficit and you are fat burning.
  • Eating healthy does not mean you can have twice as much or over indulge. Many healthy foods are calorie laden e.g. avocados,nuts,smoothies,protein bars, wholemeal bread.
  • Studies have shown that many people with a strict exercise routine move less throughout the rest of the day. So it is no good if you go to the gym every day for an hour but don’t move for 23 hours !!

I hope this will help you to avoid some pitfalls around your workout. Maybe you recognised one or two (or even 3 or 4 ??) to answer the question why you are working so hard and not losing weight. Lets kickstart that weightloss today !!!!!
