STYLE: HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT GLASSES FOR YOU

Glasses are bang on trend right now. I know some people who wear glasses with plain lenses just to accessorise their overall look. but for some people it is a more permanent part of the way they look so it is essential that you select the right ones for you to maintain your super stylish (if you have been following this blog !) look. so whether it is reading glasses, driving glasses, all day glasses or sunglasses here is a style guide.

Glasses should not only complement your face but also your lifestyle and wardrobe. Think of them like jewellery they can add to or ruin an overall look. Either way they make a statement…..about you. Beware of overly fashionable styles as they will date quickly.

FRAME COLOUR

With metal frames if you have a cool colouring you will suit silver and a warmer tone will suit gold frames. If you are unsure hold a piece of gold or silver jewellery close to the face one will light up your complexion. If your preference is a coloured frame, then warmer skin tones will suit tan or tortoiseshell frames. Cooler tones will suit grey or cool blue. Only those with strong colouring and defined brows should consider black frames. If you have dyed hair consider its natural colour golden tones will suit warmer colours and ash tones or silver/grey will suit cooler colours.

SHAPE

Firstly let us consider your face shape. The shape of your glasses should balance your face shape. If you have a long face a wider style will look better. But a diamond shape face where the widest point is your cheekbones a narrower style will under emphasize the area. If you want to enhance your cheekbones for example on an oval face then choose a larger frame and maybe some detailed arms. Oval faces are lucky as most shapes suit their faces it is more about scale. A square face shape with wide cheekbones AND wide jawline than circular/aviator frames are good for softening defined lines and can look super stylish on this face shape.Avoid detail on the arms. On the other hand round faces should steer away from round glasses . Squared, angular or aviator are a much better choice and add definition and go larger.

Also especially for men body shape should be considered both in size and shape. Consider height, weight and bone structure. The size of the glasses you choose small, medium or large should correspond. Also determine if you are predominately straight or curved. A good gauge is to study the shoulders , ‘coat hanger’ shoulders (right angles) would demonstrate an angular body and softer line shoulders would be curved. So more sharper angular styles will suit you if you are an angular type. Whereas if you are trying to correct a very round face and your body is also curved ensure the angles on the glasses are soft angular edges.

STYLE

Finally the glasses have to suit your personality and personal style. if you have a dramatic personality and wear clothing that is equally dramatic then your glasses will fit in with that style. Whilst more natural types your glasses will be low key,not too dressy or formal. Classic dressers should choose neat glasses neither too big or too small that blend easily with your outfits. Remebr choose glasses that complement you and your wardrobe.

EYE MAKE UP

A quick word on make up. If you are shortsighted the lens will magnify eyes and show up clumpy mascara and poorly applied eyeshadow. So keep eyeshadow neutral and comb through lashes after applying mascara. Long sighted lenses makes eyes look smaller. So lighten eyeshadow a shade or two and clearly define in the crease to make eyes pop, curl lashes and apply lashing of mascara. For all don’t forget to clearly define eyebrows and ensure neatly plucked/trimmed as glasses bring focus to the area.

BEAUTY : EYE CREAM-HELP OR HINDRANCE ?

As you get older you realise that the beauty industry is largely a huge money making scam. You discover the promises sold to millions of consumers are mostly lies to get us to part with our money.

Eye creams are one such product . Beauty Companies, marketeers and beauty editors (with the promise of advertising revenue) tell us that it is essential. Tag lines inform us that this product will banish our fine lines, wrinkles, puffiness and dark circles. Wow a miracle product !! Well it would be if it worked !

I have heard from surgeons carrying out eye bag surgery that on incision they find congealed creams that have not been absorbed. So could eye creams actually be making the problem worse ???

Eye creams contain exactly the same ingredients as your normal moisterizer but they need to appear heavier so have thickening agents/chemicals added to them so now bear in mind that the skin around your eyes is thinner so more is absorbed and in our conquest to fight our eyebags we use far too much of it naturally exasperating the problem.

The biggest ageing factor of eyes by far are uv rays from the sun but very few eye creams even contain SPF !

On carrying out further research for this article I was astonished to find out that Eye Creams by law do not have to be FDA approved in the US for effectiveness or safety. Under EU regulations in Europe there is a larger scrutiny of ingredients and rules and regulations exist preventing the use of words such as ‘replenish’ ‘restore’ a quick glance through my bathroom shelves or a flick through a magazine will tell you these are simply replaced with phishing words such as ‘anti age’ , ‘hydra plumping’, ‘advanced repair’. These ‘slogans’ have exactly the same effect of drawing you in.

Okay so why am I best placed to talk to you about the negative impact of eye cream. I have always been sceptical about them and early on investigated the pros and cons only to discover cons. So from a young age I have NEVER used eye creams or concealers in fact the less you touch and drag that whole area the better. I do not have any eye bags or wrinkles now in my fifties. So let me give you some alternatives that GENUINELY work without loading your body with chemicals as I can feel many of you nervously twitching when I am telling you girls and boys to toss them in the bin today !

  • All beauty starts with our nutrition. Too much salt and alcohol causes puffy eyes. You all know what you need to be eating without me preaching but do you do it? Flush out toxins with lots of water and food with high water content . Curb processed food. Like eye creams they contain chemicals.
  • Make it cold. Cold spoons over the eyes are very effective. Freeze a pack of baby wipes to place over your eyes. I keep a gel eye mask in the fridge and a rose quart roller just to revitalise my eyes in the morning.
  • Use natural products. Slices of cucumber contain mild astringent and antioxidants to reduce inflammation. Egg whites under the eyes have a temporary tightening effect for a night out much better than any product can deliver.
  • Under eye dark circles are usually because of congestion around the area . This can be down to blocked sinuses. I cannot recommend enough the regular use of a Neti Pot with saline solution to flush out the area. You will definitely love me for this and I am sure this weekly use has prevented me getting a cold in the last 10 years. It makes your whole face look less puffy and congested.
  • Pressure point massage around the eyes . So NO rubbing by just gently press with your ring finger in the corners of your eyes and either side of your nose and squeezing along the eyebrows to keep the blood flowing.
  • Sleep. Your eyes need rest too. T o replenish your eyes try to get at least 7 hours sleep every night.
  • AND the best way to prevent the UV rays ageing your eyes is to wear sunglasses with UV protection lenses. Wear them all year round . Look mysterious and stylish with the right pair.

Every one of these solutions reduce puffiness, stimulate blood supply restore and replenish in fact all those promises made to you on those expensive little jars can be fulfilled simply and cheaply without exasperating the problems with any chemically laden heavy creams and serums clogging up the area.

LIFESTYLE: SLEEP. ARE YOU GETTING ENOUGH ?

In these busy times the fist thing to go is usually your sleep time as our schedule gets tougher as we struggle to fit everything in we either go to bed later or get up earlier.

Lack of sleep can literally kill you. It has a profound impact on your organs, your mind and your general wellbeing. You may think that surviving on 6 hours or less a night is not affecting you but studies have shown it really does. 99% of the population need at least 7 hours. only 1% have been shown to have a syndrome called “short sleepers” . So stop kidding ourselves it is time to take our sleep more seriously.

SLEEP BENEFITS

  • THINKING SMARTER sleeping foe 8 hours can greatly improve cognitive function helping you to problem solve and focus better. Sleeping 6 hours or less can greatly impair our ability in thinking smartly and decision making. Studies have shown that brain function reduces by 60% after 5 consecutive nights of 6 hours or less sleep . Chronic sleep deprivation can cause permanent brain cell loss in the grey matter.
  • WEIGHT LOSS. Trying to lose weight ? Sleep more . It is obvious that you cannot eat when you are asleep !! But when you are fatigued we tend to reach for the carbohydrates or calorie laden food. Sleep deprivation messes with our hormones. The hunger hormone GHRELIN boosts appetite levels and food cravings. Lack of sleep causes our metabolism to slow so your body can’t clear fat from the cells which means it is stores more. Also when you are feeling sluccish and lethargic you are less likely to exercise.
  • SKIN.. Lack (of sleep) = slack (skin). Put simply , less sleep means more cortisol is produced. Cortisol is a skin wrecker , it exacerbates any skin inflammation like psoriasis, eczema and acne. In addition cortisol breaks down collagen and hyaluronic acid leading to lines and wrinkles and making skin less plumper and glowy. We spend a fortune on expensive creams to counteract these qualities when you can counteract this just by more sleep ! AND it is free! Our bodies use the time to rebalance and remoisterise. We all know dry skin can lead to those puffy eys and dread under eye circles !
  • RELATIONSHIP are greatly enhanced through better mood and increased sexiness. In an Oxford Economics study in 2017 it was discovered that the single biggest factor to happiness and living well was not money, sex, friends but ………getting more sleep ! Sleep deprivation obviously will affect your sex drive and your desire to be intimate Back to those pesky hormones your body when asleep produces testosterone which in turn affects your sex drive if not enough levels are being produced. Not to mention what lack of sleep does to your looks and attractiveness levels to your partner >
  • HARMONIOUS HORMONE CYCLE. As we have seen no sleep can play havoc with your hormones.So sleep is vital to hormone health. But if you are finding it hard to get to sleep post pregnancy, peri menopausal or menopause then your hormones my need adjusting. Speak with your GP for HRT or help with some proven sleep techniques such as meditation, controlled breathing herbal remedies. But difficulty sleeping can alert you to hormone imbalances and a simple blood test maybe able to rectify this. Never rely on sleeping pills this can lead to permanent sleep disturbances and lead to even bigger problems.

HOW TO GET MORE SLEEP

  • PRIORITISE SLEEP. Make it non negotiable. Don’t think of sleep as a luxury it really is necessary to your wellbeing. Do not let your social/work life get in the way of your sleep time. Household chores can wait. The rest of the film can be recorded to watch another time. Make sleep the MOST important thing in your schedule.
  • RETHINK YOUR SLEEPING PARTNER. Snoring, fidgeting can all impact on your sleep. Many couples now sleep in separate rooms to get a better quality of sleep. I personally could not sleep with someone next to me I am such a light sleeper. Interestingly it seems that we get a much better quality of sleep with our dogs curled up next to us.
  • BEDTIME ROUTINE. As we do with our children we as adults need our own wind down routine. Cleansing, cleaning teeth. Light a candle. Meditation and reading. No laptops just before bed. No alcohol or eating late this really can mess with your sleep patterns.
  • HEALTHY SLEEP ENVIRONMENT. Invest in some blackout curtains. This can really help particularly in the Summer when it gets light so early.Make sure your thermostat is set low for night time 17-18 degrees. Noisy neighbours/ traffic can be a big problem, try a white noise app to block out neighbour noise. White noise has been found to induce sleep. It masks disruptions in audible frequencies.
  • CONSISTENT SLEEP-WAKE CYCLE. This fine tunes your body’s circadian rhythm so you go to sleep faster .A regular pattern of sleep is essential. Make sleep a habit. Train your body when to feel tired and when to wake up. Even if you end up staying out late it is still better to wake up at your prescribed time.
  • TRY AN APP. There are many free apps to help you fall asleep. Some good ones are Sleepcycle, calm, and I use headspace. Some apps can track your sleep patterns. Many have sleep meditations on them. Just be sure to set the Do Not Disturb function on your phone so you dont get woken by pings and alerts !!
  • USE NATURAL SLEEP AIDS. Remember do not resort to sleeping pils. There are many natural aids like Chamomile tea, ayurvedic golden milk, lavender pillow sprays, natrasleep with valerian root a herbal aid to get you to sleep. It works.
  • MAKE YOURSELF TIRED. Expend more energy. Exercise more. Get out into the daylight to reset your body clock. Are you doing enough in the day. Or maybe you are doing too much and your head is buzzing. Keep a notepad by your bed to write down thoughts or a things to do list. But just get it out of your head and onto paper.

MIDWEEK MANTRA : A SIMPLE MEDITATION

HAPPY BUDDHA MEDITATION

Meditation is important in everyday life but I realise its not possible to always fit this into your busy schedule. So, today Im going to gift you a 5 minute meditation to do each morning to start your day the right way !!

Find a quiet place, standing with feet firmly rooted to the floor. Total silence concentrate on your breath.

STAGE ONE

Stretch arms up to the light . Inhale the light through your outstretched palms and top of your head. Visualise that the sunlight flowing through you has positive, spiritual and healing energy in it. As you body fills with light right down to your legs. Start to exhale. Visualise the light flowing down through your feet into the earth. Return your arms to your sides.

STAGE TWO

Stretch arms up to the light. This time inhale energy from the light through your palms and the third eye (mid-eyebrow point). Once again flood your body with light taking it down to your feet. Then exhale bouncing the light back up through your body rushing through your internal organs liver, intestines, heart, lungs cleansing them and filling them with light . Let the light leave through your palms and your third eye. Arms to your side.

STAGE THREE

Stretch arms up to the light. Visualise the light entering your palms and third eye again flooding your body with warmth and goodness and positivity as you inhale slowly. When your body is full of light start to exhale slowly. Now visualise that the light is swirling in a spiral manner up through your body collecting negative energies. Getting rid of harmful chi and sickness, negative thoughts, forgive people. Let the light exit your body through the three main points as it leaves all the negative energy is instantly and permanently burned up. Arms to sides.

Now you are ready to go out into the big wide world …..protected.

LIFESTYLE : WATER, THE BEAUTY ELIXIR ?

There are two schools of thinking on how much water to drink daily. On school say just drink when you are thirsty, your body will tell you how much water you need. But the other school tell you to drink at least 2 litres a day to fulfil all your body and brain requirements and thirst should not be the only indicator.

So let’s take a closer look at what water can REALLY do for you.

Simply put water is the best way to hydrate your body. Just water no sodas, coffee, alcohol. Simple plain water. Our bodies are made up of 60% water so it needs replacing.. Our brains bare made up of 73% water so imagine the detrimental affects of being dehydrated mentally.

It is easy to see if you are dehydrated , look at your pee ! It should be pale yellow consistently at every urination. 75% of us are chronically dehydrated with many of us drinking less than 0.5 litres per day !!

So lets look at the benefits to staying hydrated.

  • SKIN Drinking water flushes out toxins in the skin cells. These toxins increase ageing and also skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Many studies have shown that drinking 2 litres a day hydrates the water content in cells boosting them and reversing fine lines and plumping the skin reducing blotchiness. We use moisterizer to hold water in the skin , but there has to be water in the skin for your cream to have any effect. We spend a fortune on skin creams but one very cheap change is to drink more water and use a cheaper moisterizer.
  • HEART HEALTH Dehydration decreases the volume of blood in your arteries and veins which constricts the diameter causing the blood to pump harder. In short dehydration is as harmful to your heart as smoking. Studies show that half of all people suffering strokes are dehydrated. So easily preventable.

  • WEIGHT LOSS Hunger is usually thirst. The same area of the brain controls hunger that controls thirst. So next time you reach for a snack try drinking two small glasses of water. Also water before a meal can fill up your stomach so you eat less. Healthy hydration can boost the metabolic function by 30% this is increased by drinking ice cold water.. Basic thermodynamics the body has to work harder to warm the water to body temperature. Although personally I drink more water if it is room temperature it is definitely harder to consume freezing cold water in large quantities.
  • FATIGUE Even mild hydration can lead to tiredness, sluggishness and brain fog. Trouble concentrating and mood swings can also be affected. This is where I personally notice when I am dehydrated. When I have had my 2 litres of water my energy levels soar my body and brain feel truly alert and my hormones feel in balance. Welcome to more energy.
  • SMARTER If our brains are made up of 73% water it makes sense that when they are dehydrated cognitive function is boosted. Studies have shown that even a 1% deficit of hydration can interfere with your ability to think clearly. Dehydration has been found to cause short term memory loss. Drinking just 6-8 glasses of water a day can amplify your brains ability to work and analyse by up to 30%.
  • BETTER BREATH Oral health is overhauled with better hydration.. Not drinking enough water means less saliva which in turn leads to more bacteria multiplying that no only causes bad breath but can cause tooth decay and gum disease.
  • LESS ALCOHOL When you find yourself reaching for that glass of wine in the evening grab a big glass of water , my bet is that you no longer need the wine. When out on the town drinking water between every drink can help to stay hydrated. Alcohol is one of the great dehydrators so help your body and brain .

So here are just a few benefits of drinking 2 litres of water every day. Not convinced try an experiment, drinking the full quota for one month and see how YOU feel .

I was watching a Jordan Peterson interview this week, a great philosopher on the meaning of life and its principles. He ended the interview with a poignant statement that stayed with me throughout the week, that I wanted to share with my readers.

“there are so many people out there who never get a kind word from anyone. It is the easiest thing to do , give someone a kind word but so often we don’t “

“the difference it can make to a persons life to be in receipt of kindness is sometimes all it takes……………………..”

This is so powerful to give someone some positive feedback about themselves. Someone you know or someone you don’t know.It’s time to dip those words in sugar. Keep it sweet ! Get sugarcoating.

LIFESTYLE : DISCOVER HAPPINESS YOGA. ITS TIME TO LAUGH AGAIN !

DID WE FIND MUCH TO LAUGH ABOUT OVER THE LAST YEAR ?? My guess is that many of us cannot remember the last time we had a good belly laugh. Many people suffer SAD syndrome during the winter months and laughter seems in short supply. On a positive note (as I always am) I love the first couple of months of the year , a new fresh start, new habits to form, cosy nights in catching up on whole series I missed in my long going out Summer days.

LAUGHTER is something we do often as children but it becomes more infrequent as the seriousness of life takes hold. So my fellow stylistas its time to laugh ……..be loud and proud. Laughing is proven to have many benefits.

  • Relieves physical tension and stress
  • Diffuses anger and conflict. Do this exercise with a partner if there is hidden resentment.
  • Decrease pain.
  • Boosts the immune system
  • Increases blood flow which can strengthen the heart
  • Burns calories
  • Releases endorphins the “happiness drug”

As part of my training in the old days to become a Sound Therapist I had to learn and experience Happiness Yoga or…….Laughter Yoga as it is commonly known. This REALLY works and I GUARANTEE will have you laughing and releasing those feel good hormones and lift your happiness levels and fill your endorphin tubes to the brim. It is such fun if you do it with others but even on your own can start your day off the right way. Equally if you have had a hard day do it in the evening and laugh your way into bed great for relaxation and get rid of the days negative energy.

This is SOOOO good I wanted to share it with you………..

  • No special clothing required . Location your own choice. Get the office involved.
  • We are going to laugh your way up the body.

HUH

Stand with your feet apart shoulders relaxed. Hands on your hips. Bounce your body up and down on your heels. On the out breath vocal a series of rapid HUH, HUH sounds (as in the word hug). Feel your abdominal muscles tightening as you make the sound. Focus the sound into your hip/pelvic area. Rest

HO

Place your hands on your belly. Bounce up and down on your heels. On the out breath utter a series of rapid HO, HO sounds (as in the word holy). Feel your abdominal muscles tightening as you make the sound. Focus the sound in your belly area. Rest

HA

Place your hands on your chest. Bounce your body on your heels. On the out breath vocal a series of rapid HA, HA sounds (as in the word happy). Focus the sound in your chest/heart area. Feel your heart muscles vibrating with the sound. Rest.

HEH

Place your hands on or near your throat. Bounce your body by lifting your heels. on the out breath vocal a series of rapid HEH, HEH sounds (as in the word heaven). Focus the sound in your throat. Rest.

HEE

Bounce your body on your heels. On the out breath vocal a series of rapid HEE HEE sounds (as in the word Heal). Raise your arms above the head as you make the sound. Focus the sound at the top of your head. Rest

FLOW

Use all five sounds at random moving from one sound to another in no particular order. Keep the body moving. When you have finished laughing up and down your body, lie down and rest.

Once you really start laughing its a good idea to keep stamping your feet to keep you grounded and stop getting too light hearted.
