STYLE : STRAIGHT OR CURVED ?

All female and male bodies have either a natural curve or a straighter more angular shape. Choosing clothing that flatters your natural shape is paramount to looking more stylish and pulled together. Your friends wont realise what it is but you will definitely be dressing to reflect that you know your body and can reflect it in the best possible way.

So how do you know whether you are straight/angular or curved ?

For some people it is very obvious but for others, less so.

Is your face heart shaped ?
  • Face- squarer and chiselled or more rounder and softer.
  • Shoulders- angular shoulder line or more rounded
  • waist – straight or defined
  • Thighs – turn sideways are they straight or do they have a curved front
  • Cuticles are generally a good indication . Straight or curved ?

So now you have established if your lines are curved or straight what does this mean in terms of clothing.

NECKLINES

STRAIGHT TYPES

Suit square neck lines, sharp pointed V necks , slash necks, sharp angular shirt collars

CURVED TYPES

DOGGY STYLE

If you are one of my followers I already know you are interested in ALL things style not just your own but your homes, your cars, your friends , your partners and this extends to your …….dogs ! As a nation of pampered pooches we now love our dogs to complement us and look equally stylish. So lets have a closer look at whats hot right now in doggy style ……..

Its been a long time since I owned a dog after the death of my beloved labrador. But all my friends and family own dogs and I was surprised on how things have changed in the doggy world. They have become style icons with their fashion, adopting a healthy lifestyle with their nutrition and taking care of their bodies with the latest beauty treatments. Yes dogs have become the new supermodels !!

The new regime for dogs in todays world has come a long way in the last 10 years that I decided to write an article on the new doggy world of style. If you are a dog owner and not down with the programme why not ? Lets look at some current trends.

FASHION AND STYLE

I realise many owners have complete wardrobes for their dogs and the jury is out on whether dogs enjoy dressing up or not. Some dogs really seem to love it only you know your dog. But some dogs genuinely feel the cold and I think it is wise for dogs that have no undercoat and short hair. There really are some quite dapper coats and sweaters for dogs now. Equafleece produce warm, water repellant and breathable sweaters and coats for dogs. Other good websites are baxterboo.com poshpuppyboutique.com and pawscouture.co.uk. These are for outerwear only and it is important not to let your dog get overheated so remove clothing once inside the house (the dogs , not yours !)

Getting the coat to fit correctly is important especially if you are ordering on line. LENGTH – measure from the base of the collar to the base of the tail. GIRTH – measure the widest part of the chest just behind the front legs. NECK – where the collar would normally sit.

NUTRITION

The health food market for dogs has exploded within the last 5 years. Lilyskitchen.co.uk is a cult site for healthy kitchen food for dogs. Proper meat and all the recipes are veterinary approved. Even the packaging is eco friendly. Dental care is important and many owners forget to brush their dogs teeth regularly. Woofbrush from Lilys Kitchen provides excellent dental care. A chew stick containing fennel, coconut oil, parsley, kale and decaf green tea – I might try one myself. They actually smell really good and are all the ingredients I have in a green juice in the morning. Coconut oil can be especially bought for dogs and if you read my article recently on the many uses of coconut oil, here is a few more. It is great for bad canine breath as it contains Lauric acid , it is also good for their digestive and immune systems. There are so many benefits from using this amazing oil that you must be careful to start small just a teaspoon. Also too much oil can raise cholesterol levels. Slippery Elm is a natural herb in a capsule, powder and syrup is also good for your pets digestive tract and totally natural. All my friends seem to be giving their pets probiotics for overall health this is new to me ! I guess whats healthy for humans has migrated into the pet market and they gain the same benefits there are many on the market to choose from. But probiotic plain greek yogurt works too, not flavoured, as sugar is not good for them. But a powder sprinkled over their food is probably easiest. Not all things that are good for humans are good for dogs just one grape can kill your beloved pet and cherries are equally toxic. Raisins can cause kidney damage and citrus fruits can cause bad stomach upsets.

Natural Chew Stick

GROOMING

Oh here I go again with my favourite product coconut oil !! Another use ! For sleek and glossy coats brush through,

great for dog odours too. Apply topically to eczema or wounds as coconut oil has great healing properties.. it is important to brush your dog daily to detangle hair and minimise shedding as it thins the undercoat. Cleaning their ears eyes and teeth. Clipping their nails on a regular basis is important especially if you are not walking them on a hard surface regularly. But only trim a little at a time. Treat your dog after this so they get to enjoy their regular manicure.

Okay so now your pooches are well and truly pampered and I am sure they will repay you tenfold with their love and loyalty.

JOJOs STYLELIST TIP: Never do anything that causes your pet distress, remember if you are enjoying all these new trends in doggycare its important your pet is too. Your best friends after all.

SUSTAINABILITY IN FASHION

Last week I attended a fashion event at Bicester Village in conjunction with Harpers bazaar. I had intended to write today about the A/W trends but AVRIL MAIR (Group Luxury Fashion Director) and Kim Parker (Fashion and Jewellery Director) touched briefly on sustainability in the fashion Industry.

Avril Mair and Kim Parker

What I have since discovered concerned me so much that I decided to dedicate todays article about it. It led me to ask the question WHO IS TO BLAME: THEM OR US ?

WHAT IS SUSTAINABILITY?

Fostering change in the systems towards great ecological integrity and social justice.

FOCUS ON FASHION

The fashion industry is the second most polluting industry in the world, after oil and gas. Rubber, leather and textiles make up 9% of all solid waste. Water consumption within the industry is growing substantially. More recent reports show that the fashion industry is slowing down its sustainability efforts. But is this because of an all time high demand for quick turnaround cheap fashion.

FAST FASHION

Ironically 75% of consumers indicate that sustainability in the clothing industry is important to them. But is it the consumers insatiable appetite for ‘fast fashion’ that is the real problem ? Causing the fashion industry to lose in the sustainability stakes.

Even though the industry is working to reduce its environmental footprint people are buying more and more clothes at ridiculously cheap prices. According to AVRIL MAIR we are wearing an item of clothing only up to 6 times in these current times !!!!

British consumers buy more new clothes per person than any of its European counterparts. Even the historic two annual fashion seasons have now very blurred lines with many fashion houses doing 4-6. While high street stores now do “weekly drops” to keep up with customer demand to buy disposable cheaper pieces. What is driving this I ask myself ? Desire, status, ego or just a need for excitement……or a fast fashion fix ? This fast fashion turnover of clothing (usually made from chemically laden fabric)can clog up landfill and causes 1.2billion tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. That is more than the emissions from international flights and shipping combined .

Throughout my Styling career I have ALWAYS emphasised the need for “style for life rather then a slave to fashion” and re positioning that focus. Concentrating on investment pieces with a couple of updates each season. Clothes that last a lifetime or at least, a long time. Planning your wardrobe not impulse buying.

Cheaper clothes = environmental damage. Beyond doubt.

Are consumers placing impossible demands on the fashion industry that it is almost impossible to improve sustainability ?

Let’s look closer………

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

WATER CONSUMPTION

It can take up to 3000 litres of water to produce one shirt. 10 000 for one pair of jeans.

Cotton production itself uses huge amounts of water . Also it is normally grown in warm dry climates where water is scarce.

WATER POLLUTION

Washing polyester releases microfibres into the water system and microscopic plastics that find their way back into the food chain. The process of dyeing clothes lead to toxic chemicals polluting the water on a massive scale.

FASHION WASTE

Consumers disposing of these non bio degradable materials into landfill has risen massively into the 1990s. But fashion waste from cutting patterns is also a major problem. Although more Companies are now adopting zero waste cutting techniques.

GAS EMISSIONS

Synthetic fibres of which fast fashion tends to be produced e.g. polyester, nylon, acrylic are all made using fossil fuels. Polluting both air and water. Carbon emissions generated by the clothing an average UK household over a year is equivalent is equivalent to driving a medium sized car 6000 miles.

SOCIAL INJUSTICE

Sustainability of course includes the workforce. Cheap clothes means cheap labour usually in very poor working conditions. Exploitation is generated by a need to cut costs and the volume required to satisfy demands. A lot of our clothes are assembled in India and China workers are paid low wages, poor health and safety conditions and degradation. Child labour is frequently used whose families dare not question the quality of their sons and daughters treatment.

Contemplating at Bicester

CONCLUSION

There is no doubt that we need to explore better technology, water consumption, produce recyclable materials and and implement better working conditions to reduce the social and environmental impact, of this giant industry worth globally £300 billion per annum. But does the real answer lie with us the consumer who is demanding quick manufacturing at low prices. Perhaps we need to persuade David Attenborough to do a programme on the fashion industry !

COLOUR:HOW TO LOOK 10 YEARS YOUNGER

Swatches Grouped into Seasons

As an experienced scientific stylist I look at 8 defining areas of style.

  • Colour
  • clothing personality
  • straight/curved lines
  • tone
  • scale
  • texture,print,colour
  • figure type
  • wardrobe

Now, I don’t want to tell you which colours to wear or drag you kicking and screaming away from black, our security colour. But choosing the right colour for your complexion, hair and eye colour can instantly make you pop. It will be flattering, you will glow and I promise you can take years off your age. So Colour comes first for any client that engages my service. I have challenged this myself by wearing black with friends who will tell me I look tired but when I change to a brown top (i’m an Autumn) ON THE SAME DAY with no freshening up of make up I get so many more compliments.

The best way of ascertaining your colour palette is to visit a fully trained stylist. But if you cannot afford to do this I will take you through some general rules for you to work out your own colour. Many women instinctively are drawn to their correct colour but MANY are not.

Colour becomes more important as you get older but your colour NEVER changes throughout your lifetime even if you dye your hair, get a tan etc.

LETS GET STARTED……………….

ARE YOU COOL OR WARM ?

I use a gold or silver swatch one will make your skin pop the other will make it disappear/dull if you own gold or silver clothing this could work .

  • Pink and rosy skin (cool)
  • Sallow and yellowish (warm)
  • Gold/silver jewellery one will ‘liven’ your complexion more.
  • Tans easily- warm
  • Veins in your wrist blue (cool) green(warm)

STYLE V FASHION

Develop Your own Style

The answer to this is easy style wins EVERY time ! Fashion is transient and disposable style is about really knowing yourself and your body. This is important at any age but even more important as you get older. There is nothing worse than older person slavishly following the latest fashion trend even if it does not suit them. It is very ageing. There are mistakes made at all ages. Fashion dictates and the masses follow. Large floral prints, flares, maxis, minis , magazines tell us this is what we should be wearing. STOP !

“Fashion fades. Style is eternal.” A famous quote by the late great Yves Saint Laurent. It is important that you understand the colours that light up your face, your clothing personality, your body shape, are you angular or curved. even the scale of your accessories . A good stylist can help you with this. But they can be expensive. My blog will go some way to address these issues. Of course we all like to appear on trend but my advice is to combine some small trend pieces.

I was flicking through my first ever Vogue Magazine 1979 the clothes featured were all about style. Comparing to Vogue today, the fashion seems to have become increasingly unflattering and ugly. In your fifties and beyond this becomes easier to recognise as we are driven by huge fashion house juggernauts all looking to stand out and high street stores trying to be different from their neighbours.

ITS TIME TO TAKE BACK CONTROL……..

We wear 20% of our closet 80% of the time. Is that you ? and I know you all have items in your closet still with tags on. Unworn. Yes….admit it ? Stop the disposable fashion trap and invest once you have discovered your personal style guidelines. Shopping only from your colour palette will mean EVERYTHING in your wardrobe will co ordinate perfectly.

Vogue 1979…..75p!
When Woman looked Stylish

KEY INVESTMENT PIECES

At 50+ you must invest in some key tailored pieces I mean, blow the budget!!

. Winter Coat . Suit . Blazer. Tailored Pants. Good Undies.

CLOSET CLEANSE

Keep a tidy and clutter free closet. Less is more. Imperative to style. This demands a whole lesson on its own. Keep your eyes peeled for this one.

JOJO’s TOP TIP

DONT BE A FASHION SLAVE ! BE A STYLE MASTER!
