STYLE: GLAMOUR V COUNTRY STYLIST EDIT

TIS THE SEASON………

It is the most wonderful time of the year. the chance to (finally) bring the glamour on with endless rounds of social events. Even dinner a deux requires a little more effort at this time of the year. Then when you are not partying there are some serious country looks going on too. Great or the school run, long wintry walks in the Country or weekends away partaking in country pursuits.

Both looks are of course combined if you are lucky enough to be invited to a country house party at this time of the year.

GLAMOUR EDIT

So let us view my picks for an injection (yes another booster !!) of glamour whether you are on an endless social spree or just staying at home. Lets go glam !

From the little black dress to jewel colours. Tops such as sequinned bolero or a vava voom tee to jazz up an existing outfit. Beautiful earring as real glamour is about attention to every detail and if you are staying in it just HAS to be maribou/ feather trimmed pjs……….doesn’t it ? Surely ?

IF YOU HAVE BEEN SENT THIS ON E MAIL OR CANNOT VIEW THE IMAGES CLICK ON THE URL LINK AT THE BASE OF THE PAGE.

COUNTRY CASUAL EDIT

Although there is nothing casual about this look. It is super stylish and thought through but not give the impression that you have tried tooo hard. The “no make up make up look” but in the world of fashion.

Country casuals have to be practical and comfortable. Muted colours keep it classy for the winter months. So we have some practical footwear and of course trousers must be warm and skinny to tuck into long boots. Nothing worse than damp trouser bottoms flapping around your ankles. Super stylish outerwear. Tartan and khaki great colours for the country scene. Coats and jackets are your investment pieces for this look and as the country look tends to not be fashion led these pieces will last a lifetime. Don’t forget the accessories , some brightly coloured scarves for your otherwise muted tones and Mulberry for handbags complete your country wardrobe.

Have fun with creating your two key looks for the season !

STYLE: AUTUMN TREND – THE SHACKET

Be bang on trend with a shacket this Autumn. An outerwear essential. .A cross between a shirt and a Jacket. A slightly thicker fabric than a normal shirt but be careful not to bulk up too much on the fabric. It is all about the layering. The most popular trend will be a checked pattern although their are many plain ones to choose from either go for Winter pastels or Autumnal shades of olive taupe and cream . depending on your colouring i.e cool or warm (please see my past blog on How to work out your Colouring).

The shacket is less structured than a jacket , stylishly casual but with collar and cuffs. Worn loose and open over a simple vest or a thin sweater. Should be oversized, so you maybe able to steal your mans shacket. !! Can be paired with jeans, loungewear, legging or even a dress. Fabulous over a knitted dress.

This staple in your wardrobe can become an all year round essential.

So no need to be scared of the shacket. it can seem like a styling nightmare but as you can see it is really simple. Experiment with items you have in your closet to get the best look for you and your new shacket(s).

So let us take a look at some of my favourite shackets on the market. There are pastels, checks , pastel checks together, plain, long, short and even a couple for your man to buy so of course you can then borrow them. (sneaky girls). A piece I absolutely love in this edit is the tasselled Shacket from Marks and Spencer. Two trends in one ! AND a great price too.

You can purchase direct from this site by clicking on the images ! If you received this blog by e mail direct to your in box then click on the URL at the base of the email to view the images .

LIFESTYLE: CREATE A HOME OFFICE

As many of us have been forced to work from home over the last two years and we still do not know when the lockdowns will truly end, we may be looking for some inspiration for your workspace at home. This could be an alcove, a cupboard under the stairs, a corner of a room or some of you could be lucky enough to have a dedicated room already as a home office. Who knows ? Now lockdown is lifted it may become a more permanent and suitable arrangement for you to continue working from home so why not start planning a fabulously stylish office where you just LOVE to go to work everyday.

COLOUR SCHEME

Light or neutral colours make a space look larger. You certainly don’t want it too dark and cosy or you will fall asleep !! keep it clean and tonal. The simple Scandinavian look is very on trend right now. Walls, ceiling and shelves in the same colour works very well which allows you to add some of your personality and a pop of colour with accessories.

WINDOW TREATMENTS

As much light as possible is preferable to keep you alert but it is important to reduce any glare on your screen. Shutters make a good option or venetian blinds as they let enough light in whilst giving you the option to adjust to minimise glare. They also maintain the clean lines of your office scheme.

LIGHTING

Try to position your desk by a window to enable as much light as possible. Too bright lighting can cause headaches and difficulty concentrating. Softer lighting to minimise the blue light from computer screens is a better idea and a good desk lamp for when you are burning the midnight oil !

Filing cabinets and storage boxes are where you can add some of your personality either go bright or just keep it tonal with the walls and floor depending on which look you are opting for. But check out some of my ideas below.

DESK AND CHAIR

You may opt to save your statement pieces for your desk and chair. A statement desk does not have to be about colour there are some super stylish natural wood or stone desks around that are real art pieces. Be sure that both are ergonomically suitable. When seated your feet should be flat on the floor with a 90-120 degree bend at the knee. The top of your screen should be eye level if not this is easily remedied by standing your screen on some books etc to raise it up higher. the desk height should enable your elbows to be close to your waist and body.

ART

Place some art on the walls that mean something to you and reflect you as a person. Art is very subjective so it has to be a piece that you LOVE to look at. That inspires YOU. Even memo boards or calendars can be artistic . How about purchasing some chalkboard paint and designing your own wall workboard. This can create an ultra modern image.

JOJOS STYLELIST TIP: FIVE NEW DRESSES MAKES SUMMER DRESSING SO EASY. HELPS TO PLAN A HOLIDAY WARDROBE TOO. CUTS OUT THE HASSLE OF DECIDING WHAT GOES WITH WHAT. DONT FORGET TO CONSIDER YOUR COLOURING, BODY SHAPE AND CLOTHING PERSONALITY AS DISCUSSED IN PREVIOUS ARTICLES…….STYLISTAS !

STYLE: GUIDE TO CHOOSING THE RIGHT GLASSES

Glasses are bang on trend right now. I know some people who wear glasses with plain lenses just to accessorise their overall look. but for some people it is a more permanent part of the way they look so it is essential that you select the right ones for you to maintain your super stylish (if you have been following this blog !) look. so whether it is reading glasses, driving glasses, all day glasses or sunglasses here is a style guide.

Glasses should not only complement your face but also your lifestyle and wardrobe. Think of them like jewellery they can add to or ruin an overall look. Either way they make a statement…..about you. Beware of overly fashionable styles as they will date quickly.

FRAME COLOUR

With metal frames if you have a cool colouring you will suit silver and a warmer tone will suit gold frames. If you are unsure hold a piece of gold or silver jewellery close to the face one will light up your complexion. If your preference is a coloured frame, then warmer skin tones will suit tan or tortoiseshell frames. Cooler tones will suit grey or cool blue. Only those with strong colouring and defined brows should consider black frames. If you have dyed hair consider its natural colour golden tones will suit warmer colours and ash tones or silver/grey will suit cooler colours.

SHAPE

Firstly let us consider your face shape. The shape of your glasses should balance your face shape. If you have a long face a wider style will look better. But a diamond shape face where the widest point is your cheekbones a narrower style will under emphasize the area. If you want to enhance your cheekbones for example on an oval face then choose a larger frame and maybe some detailed arms. Oval faces are lucky as most shapes suit their faces it is more about scale. A square face shape with wide cheekbones AND wide jawline than circular/aviator frames are good for softening defined lines and can look super stylish on this face shape.Avoid detail on the arms. On the other hand round faces should steer away from round glasses . Squared, angular or aviator are a much better choice and add definition and go larger.

Also especially for men body shape should be considered both in size and shape. Consider height, weight and bone structure. The size of the glasses you choose small, medium or large should correspond. Also determine if you are predominately straight or curved. A good gauge is to study the shoulders , ‘coat hanger’ shoulders (right angles) would demonstrate an angular body and softer line shoulders would be curved. So more sharper angular styles will suit you if you are an angular type. Whereas if you are trying to correct a very round face and your body is also curved ensure the angles on the glasses are soft angular edges.

STYLE

Finally the glasses have to suit your personality and personal style. if you have a dramatic personality and wear clothing that is equally dramatic then your glasses will fit in with that style. Whilst more natural types your glasses will be low key,not too dressy or formal. Classic dressers should choose neat glasses neither too big or too small that blend easily with your outfits. Remebr choose glasses that complement you and your wardrobe.

EYE MAKE UP

A quick word on make up. If you are shortsighted the lens will magnify eyes and show up clumpy mascara and poorly applied eyeshadow. So keep eyeshadow neutral and comb through lashes after applying mascara. Long sighted lenses makes eyes look smaller. So lighten eyeshadow a shade or two and clearly define in the crease to make eyes pop, curl lashes and apply lashing of mascara. For all don’t forget to clearly define eyebrows and ensure neatly plucked/trimmed as glasses bring focus to the area.

So there you have it a guide for you to take to the opticians next time you attend your eye test. You know yourself better than a sales assistant who are rarely trained in matters of style. For more tips view my video below from style channel youtube.com/c/stylelist

STYLE : HOW TO PUT THE VA VA VOOM INTO ZOOM

people on a video call

This year has seen the way we work change and this could now be on a permanent basis for many of us as we adapt to working from home and conducting many meetings on Zoom calls. This raises a question of how we dress for maximum impact on the screen from the waist up!. Of course as many of you will know in my professional capacity as a scientific stylist being aware of your palette that makes you pop on screen and your clothing personality can really make a difference, So rather than go through all the rules once again the articles can be found on past blogs on this site. But will endeavour to repeat the blogs in the not too distant future.

Today will select some of my favourite pieces to put the va va voom into zoom. FROM THE WAIST UP !!

But first lets look at a few rules to look zoomtastic !

  1. Do not dress too distracting you want people to focus on what you say not how you look.
  2. Men clean shaven/groomed women hair off face and sorry girls please apply some make up . Both sexes do not look like you would normally look behind closed doors that “just got out of bed “look.
  3. Keep body parts covered. No cleavage or bare arms.
  4. No loud prints.
  5. No blanket bright white or black . Break up with another colour.
  6. Try to face a window and not back to a window to avoid the ‘silhouette’ effect.
  7. Use blank walls behind you where possible. I do not understand this TV trend of being interviewed in front of bookcases…. so distracting so you are not concentrating on what the person is saying………or perhaps that is why MPs favour this method !!
  8. Step back from the camera to avoid ‘wide angle face’. but don’t sit so far away that the mike cannot hear you clearly.
  9. Eye to eye with the web cam comes across best when talking to someone so stack your lap top if required or adjust your chair.
  10. Pretty much wear what your Company dress code is in the office with a little tweaking according to these rules. Although I am sure what you are wearing from the waist down we can leave to your own discretion.
man in black suit jacket holding white paper

MAKE UP

  1. Show you care. No matter how early it is apply a quick light make up.
  2. Use concealer under the eys. Cameras have a tendency to emphasize shadows but pick up on light.
  3. Therefore highlight cheekbones but avoid looking too shiny and highlighting other areas that you may normally highlight in everyday situations.
  4. Brighter blusher.
  5. Natural eyeshadow in the crease of your eye to make eyes pop.
  6. Lashings of mascara.
  7. Nude glossy lips. Bright coloured lipstick can look ‘jammy; on screen and emphasize any bleeding and smudging. Distracting.
  8. Use powder on the central zone even if you do not normally. To prevent shiny face.
