HAND LUGGAGE TOILETRIES EDIT: A RETHINK

IF like me, you regularly travel with just hand luggage you will know how difficult it is to fit all of your toiletries and cosmetics into one 20 x 20 plastic bag. Today I am going to show you a foolproof way to take everything you need for a quick getaway with minimum of fuss and no confiscations at passport control. There are many new products on the market that do not need to go into the plastic bag ! The secret is to choose one of the new influx of solid and balm products that were once liquid or gel. Moisterizers are available in solid balms as are perfumes. Foundations can be compact formulas as can blushers and lipcolours. Then there are old favourites our sticks and pencils. This can be done girls, with forward thinking and planning there will be no need to skimp on beauty. Although I must point out that they have been tried and tested at Heathrow and Gatwick Airports only and smaller provincial airports could be inconsistent.

Firstly start with a soft vanity bag in a beautiful sunny colour. Mine is by Inthefrow.com (thanks Victoria ). I love this bag as it opens like a lid to reveal all my products at a glance perfect for on board touch ups. It does come filled with products for £67.

All My Travel Essentials

In this bag I pack

  • Small mirror
  • Eyemask
  • Hair toggles
  • Ear plugs
  • Toothbrush
  • Moisterizer as a balm . Mine is Lumene Nutri recharging balm £31.90
  • Razor
  • Stick deodrant. Only aerosols and roll ons need to go in the plastic bag.

  • Chanel eyebrow/liner pencil £21
  • Tom Ford Nude lip coulour shine (sultry)£40
  • Bobbi brown Lip balm (SPF 15) Clear £17.50 perfect for in flight and on the beach

All the above will fit very neatly into this small vanity bag with plenty of room to place your 20 x 20 clear plastic bag on top with the few essential liquid items (not exceeding 100ml remember!)

DISCOVER MAKE UP TRICKS TO LOOK YOUNGER

Making up your face has some very different rules as we get older most advice you see in magazines relate to much younger women. as a make up artist I want to give you some tried and tested hacks to create a more youthful glow. Basically it is all about gloss and glow as we get older and less is more. How do we achieve the “no make up ” make up look to make us look radiant and healthy ? Read on……….

THE BASE.

The general advice is to use primer. No no no. This creates a matt finish and tends to make Foundation sit in the crease and highlights lines and wrinkles. So no primer. I am a big advocate of using facial oil in the mornings or even an oil based cleanser. It does give a lovely dewy glow. A word on foundations do not use a matt foundation. A light base with light reflecting particles is much more flattering. A cc tinted moisturiser works well.

CONTOURING AND HIGHLIGHTING.

Now you can be the master of all you survey. I tend once again to steer away from the powders that you girls use but use the Chubby Stick from Clinique. One for contouring and one for highlighting. Cream based. Now ,like a colouring book contour on the parts you want to play down e.g. jawline, sides of nose, hollows of cheeks and highlight the parts you want to see e.g. cheekbones, centre of nose, cupids bow. Highlighting is important as you get older it really can lift a face. Choose products to suit your budget but choose a cream based one.

EYEBROWS.

Very important to define your brows. This will instantly lift your face. I am going to do an eyebrow masterclass in the coming weeks as it is so important. Eyebrows need to be a shade darker than your hair. There are many products from pencils, wax, dye, fibre thickening and stencils it is whole industry but deserves an article in its own right. But for now just make sure you have neat defined eyebrows to frame your face.

EYE MAKE UP.

You will hate me for this one. Throw the eye shadow/cream in the bin. Our eyelids wrinkle rapidly as we grow older don’t draw attention to them. I do think coloured eye shadows are ageing if you have to then go neutral. I prefer to use just an eyeglosser , Kevin Aucoin has a delicious little pot of eyeglass with a shimmer you can use this across the cheekbones and on the lips. I simply love a multi use product. But then use lashings of mascara !!!

STILL ON EYES.

This trick will make your eyes look whiter, wider and more awake. Use a white pencil to colour the inside corners of the eyes and the outside corners of the eyes. Then run the pencil along the inner rim of the eye. Watch them sparkle !! I use BENEFIT EYEBRIGHT.

LIPS.

If your lips are thinning or you are developing liplines as I have (too much kissing !! Never smoked ) then no dark or matt lipsticks. This will make your lips look thinner and can bleed into lines. Luckily its all about the nude lips. Choose a nude to suit your skin tone It can take weeks to find your perfect nude. Charlotte Tilbury has a massive choice. My personal favourite is a gloss by Tom Ford Absolute Peach but it is about to be discontinued !!!!!!! Heeelllllpppp ! if you find your perfect nude in a lipstick then I would definitely slick some clear gloss over the top to make the lips look fuller.

LIP LINERS

Now I have a secret weapon. It is a neutral lip liner , the WONDER PENCIL from NYX to prevent lips from bleeding and give definition to the lip . If you go along the outside of your lips slightly it will make them look fuller and pouty.

Two of my favourite products

FIXING SPRAY

Now I hope you are all using Fixing Spray to set your look. This must be a dewy one for more mature skins. The best on the market is probably the cheapest on the market. Barry M FLAWLESS MIST & FIX in dewy finish. Roughly about £5.95. Sets your make up and leaves skin looking dewy and refreshed all day !!

If you need a visual look at make up for more mature skins then checkout my youtube tutorial below

CELLULITE : Do Creams Work ?

This is the shortest post ever…….. NO !

Let me expand

I have never believed that rubbing chemically laden product into toxic cells really worked. More toxins on toxins ? If anything, can further compound the issue and force the cells to have to work harder to expunge more chemical waste.

I am very careful about using chemical products on my body where I rarely see the benefits. I can recommend daily body brushing before your shower to boost the circulation and cold water on the area for the same reason. Any benefit from applying product is normally from the consistent massage but instead of splurging on expensive product selling you hopes and dreams the same benefit can be gained from organic ,virgin cold pressed sesame or coconut oil.

One of my rituals each morning is to massage organic sesame oil into my body paying particular attention to thighs, elbows and knees.Really squeezing the toxins out you can actually hear any fluid in the cells popping. On hair washing days I also massage into my hair. Leaving it to sink in as I do my morning meditation and gratitude prayer. After rinsing in the shower you are left with silky glowing skin . Not only does this aid smooth skin but also it is a beautiful ritual to thank your body for all it does for you. It is very easy to do for yourself. Although I use organic coconut oil for everything ( even cleaning my house!!) I prefer to use the sesame oil so I don’t smell like a coconut all day. Both are far cheaper than the chemically laden expensive cellulite creams that really don’t work and can actually exacerbate the condition. The power is in circulation and massage.

I am in my fifties and I really don’t have a problem with cellulite (although we all have a bit) after following this regular regime combined with daily yoga……oh and of course a good diet and cutting down on processed food. Back to those chemicals again that don’t belong in the body !

So Ladies I hope this helps build your army in the battle against cellulite.

DISCOVER 6 GREAT BEAUTY GADGETS

These are actually 6 beauty techs that I cannot live without .

From top left clockwise

ROSE QUARTZ DERMAROLLER

I always leave this in the fridge and roll it over my face and neck first thing in the morning. it not only wakes you up but firms and tones the skin and provides lymphatic drainage. Low tech but effective. Mine is White lotus at cultbeauty.co.uk £42.99 this is a luxury grade quartz.

DIAMOND PEELING MICRODERMABRASION

This tool is very good for fine lines, sun damage and visible pores. The diamond head exfoliates while the suction stimulates the skin and removes the dead skin cells. Products are absorbed better after. a useful tool particularly for lip lines but be warned use on the lowest setting to avoid bruising. a korean product who are world leaders in beauty technology. Amazon.co.uk £27.99

TRIA LASER HAIR REMOVAL 4X

Great for face and body. I would not say the hair removal is permanent but it certainly slows hair regrowth. FDA approved. Beats endless trips to the salon , who has the time. current body.com £375

MICRONEEDLE ROLLER

For use over the face to speed up absorption of serums and creams and enable a deeper penetration. also plumps skin and collagen production. This is not a new gadget it has been around for over 50 years ! There are body ones too to combat cellulite but the jury is out on this one. Beauty ORA do both facial and body ones in lovely bright colours m.skinstore.com

CACI NON-SURGICAL FACELIFT

Of course this is not a salon grade Caci machine. But as you have one at home you can use it more regularly. This has amazing results. In fact after doing one side of my face I can see a visible lifting compared to the other side. You have to purchase the serum filled cotton buds.Love this. caci-microlift.co.uk electrobuds £34.99

DR DENNIS GROSS FACEWARE PRO

This SpectraLite tech mask has LED blue and red lights blue for acne and red for fine lines and wrinkles. Leaves a visible glow to the skin (even with the mask off. Lol) and really does reduce fine lines. All in 3 minutes a day. But you do have to use it EVERY day to get the full effect. Can be very scary for friends and family ! I used to go to the Light Clinic in Harvey Nichols twice a week for this treatment so it has already paid for itself. HarveyNichols £430
