FOOD: 5 HERBS THAT SHOULD BE IN YOUR DAILY DIET

Cultivate Herbs To Suit Your Own Symptoms

Herbs add flavour and enhance the blandest of meals but how many of you are aware that they have contain health and medicinal properties that can contribute a great deal to your daily wellness levels. Dried or fresh ! They are easy to add to EVERY meal whether in smoothies, salads, soups or sprinkled onto raw or cooked meals.

It is time to develop your own medicine cabinet in your own back yard with a highly nutritional herb garden to alleviate a wide range of symptoms.

So here are five herbs (out of a list of hundreds) but use this list as a basis to start or even start growing some in the garden. These ones I have selected are particularly easy to incorporate into your daily meals.

OREGANO

This herb is familiar to nearly everyone but actually has MORE flavour dried than fresh. So a great store cupboard essentials. Very easy to grow in a pot in your garden.

BENEFITS

Antibacterial defending the body against bacteria in the gut and the skin. A high content of manganese, calcium, vitamin k and fibre therefore an ideal herb to detoxify the body by assisting the liver function. Also excellent for bone health very useful in later life for protection against osteoporosis. A natural form of Omega 3 fatty acids can rebalance cholesterol and help prevent heart attacks and strokes.

DIET

Great with pasta particularly good with tomato based sauces in its dried form. Or incorporate into homemade burgers including vegan ones.

ASHWAGANDA

This ancient herb I take in the form of a powder EVERY morning in my smoothie. It has very powerful properties and is an important herb in Ayurvedic medIcine.

BENEFITS

There have been many studies that have proven that this herb substantially reduces anxiety and depression and is great for menopause symptoms. reduces cortisol levels if over stressed. Also reduces inflammation. I credit Ashwaganda to significantly alleviating my arthritis. Many studies also link this powerful herb with reducing cancerous tumours when taken regularly. Although I cannot personally lay claim to this it is worth adding this to your diet to see if it is of benefit to you.

DIET

I buy this in powder form and add to my smoothies and green juice every single day. Or add it to your soups.

MINT

This is so easy to grow even I can grow it . Right now I have an abundance of mint in my garden for my daily use.

BENEFITS

The benefits of mint are widely documented. It is uplifting and a fantastic aid to digestion and bloating. Can really help with IBS symptoms. Relieve congestion from colds and bronchitis. Mental clarity and of course mask bad breath.

DIET

Great with boiling water as a mint tea. Fresh leaves incorporated into salads both savoury or fruit salads. Try to introduce after meals. This leaf is more potent fresh and unbruised as opposed to dried but easily picked fresh straight from your herb garden you are now cultivating !

NUTMEG

Known as the sexy spice. Although considered a spice it actually is a seed from a herb the nutmeg tree that bears two fruit mace and nutmeg. Although a word of warning can be dangerous in large quantities as can be hallucinogenic and is actually banned in Saudi Arabia ! so we are just talking about a sprinkle here definitely no more than a teaspoonful. Great in a dried powder form and keeps for many months in the store cupboard.

BENEFITS

A nerve relaxant therefore excellent for inducing sleep and relaxation. Raises sexual libido and improves memory. swap the nightly glass of wine out for a sprinkle of nutmeg.

DIET

Perfect with spinach as an accompaniment to your evening meal. In a glass of hot milk before bed . Commonly used in the Ayurvedic ‘golden milk’. Sprinkle on coffee. Would tend to use this later in the day because of its relaxant properties.

PARSLEY

Native to the mediterranean light scented and fresh taste makes it very versatile and pretty much can be added to most dishes for maximum benefit raw or cooked. Also it is easy to grow in your own backyard. I have included it on this list for its ease of use and availability and its impressive nutritional value.

BENEFITS

Great source of vitamin A and C therefore making it high in anti oxidants so good for the blood and the skin. Helps protect the eyes and help prevent age related macular degeneration . Reduces water retention and neutralises bad breath.

DIET

Add to almost any food dried or fresh, raw or cooked. Add to green juice if suffering from puffiness or water retention or simmer with water then strain to make a tea. Or just chew on a fresh sprig for fresh breath and to neutralise odours such as garlic. This wonderful herb is often not given credit for its amazing nutritional value and is often overlook as just a piece of green garnish so do not push it to one side consume it.

BEAUTY : HOW TO AGE SLOWLY

In your fifties your body starts to deteriorate more rapidly. We all know what we are supposed to be doing to stay healthy and there are anti ageing articles and products all around us. Regular readers of this blog will be armed with many facts on how to slow the process down. But let me make it clear you cannot anti age and you cannot reverse the process. Those that try hard to look younger end up looking older. HOWEVER you CAN slow the process. I know you are intelligent lot and these days women are armed with great knowledge but are you actually putting that knowledge into practise ?? So let me put it into one age defying capsule for you today and look at the three areas where you can make changes TODAY. Food , exercise and mental activity………..

FOOD

Eat well but limit the portion size. Portion sizes have increased over the years eat on smaller plates at home or share a main if eating out with friends or even order a starter portion. As you get older you need less food and your metabolism slows down. I personally eat one meal a day between 2-4 pm and at 56 i am still a healthy size 10. I have a green smoothie at midday loaded with goodness (find the recipe under the ‘Food’ section.

There is a growing consensus now that breakfast is a meal to be skipped to enable you to consume less calories, But also the longer you can wait to break your fast from the day before the better it is for your body and your joints to rest and rejuvenate them. Time restricted eating is the best thing you can do for your body as you get older even if you follow this pattern Monday to Friday then let loose on the weekends. Try to give your bodys’ digestive system a complete break when you can from 6PM to maybe midday the following day. This has been shown to bring inflammation down within the internal organs and the joints. Eating often throughout the day to stoke the metabolism has now been disproven as a method to lose weight and the must eat a big breakfast mantra began in the 1920s by breakfast food manufacturers.

Do not deny yourself foods that you love but in moderation. In your fifties healthy eating must become a way of life give up on the ‘diets’ and learn to make great meals containing fresh unprocessed ingredients. Simple uncomplicated meals can bring great pleasure to the senses. I particularly love the Hemsley sisters recipes. ITS ALL EASY by Gwyneth Paltrow and EAT, NOURISH,GLOW by Amelia Freer. Most of these meals can be put together in the time it takes to have a takeaway delivered. Once you start to eat clean you wont want to pollute your body with dirty food again. Excess SUGAR in your diet is one of the fastest ways to age your skin and your body try to avoid it where possible. But of course allow yourself a red wine or even a clean spirit like agave tequila !!! Drink more water as you get older your body needs to be constantly hydrated to work correctly and also skin looks more plumped at least 2 litres a day.

Have fun discovering wonderful food and clean up your diet in small steps to give your skin a healthy glow and fill your body with energy and reducing inflammation start today to slow the ageing process and prevent you from dealing with early on set illnesses due to proper nutrition.

EXERCISE

I am a big fan of Yoga and pilates more gentle yet strengthening exercise regime that also provides mental clarity and anti stress benefits. While weight control is 80% of what we eat and less about exercise, but exercise certainly slows the ageing process down. I personally am not a fan of high octane exercise like running and aerobics as they can be impactive on older joints and the Japanese believe that you only have so many breaths in your body so to continually be overworking the heart cause a shorter life. But I AM an advocate of you doing what YOU love as long as you are moving. A beautiful walk every day can be wonderful for destressing , getting fit and slowing the ageing process. A quick word about weight training . Buy yourself some hand weights and use them a few times a day, whilst your waiting for the kettle to boil it is important to strengthen your bones and muscles with weight bearing exercises to prevent /delay oesteoporosis .

The message here is just keep moving , every day to delay ageing but enjoy whatever it is you are doing. Lets keep that body oiled rather than rusty.

Buy a lovely notebook and a pen in a beautiful coloured ink. This works try it. Also it is important as we get older to continue learning, no guys this does not have to be a major programme you are undertaking like a Masters degree or a new language. How about Renaissance Art or French Wines ? Combine books with heading to Art Galleries or Wine Tastings. Make new friends with these common interests providing stimulating conversations. Sudoku, crosswords to exercise the mental agility side of your mind as well as the creative. Learning a musical instrument via the many apps available has been proven to keep a mind young , you are never to old to start learning.

Expand Your Knowledge Not Your Waistline

Stress is the biggest ager both on the outside and the inside. So try to combat stress wherever necessary. But this is one thing that DOES improve with age the ability to cope with stress and view life differently , in a more relaxed manner. Yoga and Pilates as mentioned before really does help with this it is a workout for the mind as well as the body and also regulates deep breathing. Combatting stress is a lengthy subject and deserves an article all on its own and I am sure that by now you have this covered.

SO LET IT GO !

I REALISE THAT WITH DEPRESSION IT CAN BE VERY HARD TO THINK OUTSIDE OF THE SELF AND A MENTAL ILLNESS CAN BE ALL CONSUMING. IF YOU CAN IDENTIFY WITH THIS, ASK YOURSELF WHEN THE LAST TIME YOU GAVE A THOUGHT AND SHOWED SOME CARING TO THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU. THOSE THAT YOU KNOW AND THOSE THAT YOU ARE YET TO KNOW.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR FOOTPRINT GREEN

Now I realise many people are in denial about climate change but no one can deny that we are ruining our planet with at best poor housekeeping and at worst dirty filthy habits. There also can be NO denial that we can nurture our planet by all just making a few subtle changes to our lifestyle.

I decided to write about this following a dinner party discussion which involved us listing how green we were. Now I have never really thought about myself as being a green activist but I was surprised how “green” I actually live. I know I could do more but what I do , I do on a consistent basis, without too much trouble or hardship. So I will list the things that I came up with over the dinner table, which I am sure most of you already do, but if you don’t try to make some small adjustments to help clean our beautiful planet up. If I can do it, I am pretty sure you can. The planet is a thing of beauty to be handled with care and passed onto the many generations to whom we pass the baton.

  • Always shower and only for 30 seconds unless i am washing my hair, rarely bath.
  • I generate only half a small bag of waste each week.
  • Turn tap off while cleaning my teeth
  • I do not class myself as a vegetarian but I only meat about once every two months
  • Do not buy fast disposable fashion. I shop for clothes twice a year not twice a week ( or as some people do twice a day !!!)
  • No longer buy bottled water I bought a Brita filter jug but I use the filter three times longer than recommended. I have a reusable bottle for life for water on the go.
  • Energy efficient . I only have lights on in the room that is being occupied.
  • Installed solar panels on my roof to lower my energy bills.
  • Make my own cleaning products from white wine vinegar/lemon juice and soda crystals to cut down my chemical waste.
  • Now take trains for long journeys (this is new to me !!) but they are much better than I recall.
  • I have hessian lifetime shopping bags.
  • Buy loose fruit and vegetables and don’t even use the plastic bags on the rack they go onto the conveyer belt singularly !!
  • Oh… and I only have one child. Now I would never, unlike Meghan and Harry tell you how many children to have. Even though they now have gone against their own advice. Do as they say not as they do has become their mantra ! But just saying. This is only about me.

I certainly do not want to become a green preacher but these are all simple things to inject into your everyday life without too much planning. Think, if we all did these basic things what a massive difference we could make collectively.

FOR MANY OF US THE LAST YEAR INCLUDED MANY POSITIVE EXPERIENCES AND CHANGES WE MADE TO OUR EVERYDAY LIVES AND IT IS IMPORTANT NOT TO LOSE SIGHT OF OUR NEW HABITS.

SO SPEND SOME TIME TODAY REFLECTING ON THE CHANGES YOU WANT TO TAKE FORWARD WITH YOU AS WE START TO NORMALISE OUR LIVES AGAIN. WHAT WILL BE YOUR NEW NORMAL ?

THESE MAY INCLUDE

  • STRUCTURING YOUR WORKING WEEK DIFFERENTLY. WORKING FROM HOME MORE OR CHANGING THE HOURS. WORKING LESS OR MORE PRODUCTIVELY.
  • COMPILING RECIPES YOU LEARNED IN LOCKDOWN. COOKING SIMPLER, FRESHER RECIPES, THAT CAN BE PREPARED IN THE TIME IT TAKES TO ORDER A TAKEOUT.
  • MANY PEOPLE HAVE RECONNECTED TO THE OUTDOORS AND NATURE. WALKING IS THE NEW GYM. THINK ABOUT HOW YOU CAN INCORPORATE A WEEKLY NATURE BURST INTO YOUR BUSY LIFE.
  • A NEW APPRECIATION FOR YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS AND HUMAN CONTACT HAS BECOME MORE PROMINENT OVER THE LAST YEAR. TRY NOT TO LOSE THIS. SEND LITTLE MASSAGES OF APPRECIATION. MAKE TIME TO SEE THOSE IMPORTANT TO YOU.
  • SPEND TIME WITH YOUR CHILDREN BUT BE PRESENT! LISTEN, ENGAGE,PLAY.
  • CONTINUE TO LEARN NEW SKILLS, LANGUAGES, INSTRUMENTS TO ENGAGE THE BRAIN, GIVE YOU A SENSE OF ACHIEVEMENT AND KEEP DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY AT BAY.
  • SILENCE IS IMPORTANT. KEEP UP THE MEDITATION AND YOGA. OR JUST TAKE 10 MINUTES TO LIE IN A QUIET DARK ROOM TO RECONNECT WITH YOU.
  • LESS MEANINGLESS SHOPPING. ONLY BUY WHAT YOU REALLY NEED. I CERTAINLY BUYING LESS CLOTHES SINCE THE SHOPS REOPENED AS IT ALL SEEMS LESS IMPORTANT SOMEHOW. TIME TO SAVE THE PLANET AND REDUCE THE LANDFILL !!
