I know many of you reading this, (if you even have time on this busy weekend before Christmas) are probably frantically busy and getting stressed. Many people have forgotten how to enjoy christmas. I adore Christmas but speaking to my friends they all now seem to dread the very idea of it. On a recent poll I read that 68% dread Christmas. So it made me ask myself why do I love it sooo much and I came to the conclusion it was about my firmly established Christmas rituals. I am literally Mother Christmas. So let me share with you some simple rituals for putting the Joy back into Christmas and making it more pleasurable than painful……

MY RITUALS

  • BAKING. NO! I AM NOT GOING TO ADD TO YOUR STRESS BY DEMANDING YOU MAKE YOUR OWN PUDDING AND CAKE BUT I LOVE TO DO SMALL TOUCHES AND CREATIONS EG MY OWN CRANBERRY AND PORT SAUCE, MINCE PIES (SHOP BOUGHT PASTRY) BUT CREATIVE FILLINGS WITH ADDED ORANGE ZEST AND CRANBERRIES TO MINCEMEAT. CHOOSE YOUR OWN SIMPLE ADDITIONS FOR ONE AFTERNOON IN YOUR CHRISTMAS KITCHEN WITH CHRISTMAS CAROLS AND A GLASS OF MULLED WINE.
  • WE HAVE A WHOLE DAY OF CHRISTMAS DECORATING AT THE END OF NOVEMBER. A LIFETIME RITUAL. THE ANDY WILLIAMS ALBUM GOES ON AN OLD TURNTABLE. A BIG ROAST DINNER. THE FAMILY GATHERS. MULLED WINE AND MINCE PIES WHILE WE ALL GET CREATIVE WITH THE TREES. SIGNIFIES THE BEGINNING OF CHRISTMAS. WHAT IS A CHORE FOR MANY IS A RESTFUL PLEASURABLE EXPERIENCE FOR US.
  • THE EARLIER YOU START CHRISTMAS PRESENT BUYING I GUARANTEE YOU THAT YOU END UP SPENDING MORE. YOU JUST KEEP GOING. SO I CHOOSE ONE DAY A FEW DAYS BEFORE CHRISTMAS. ALONE. I MAKE THE DAY PLEASURABLE WITH A LUNCH BOOKED SOMEWHERE SUMPTUOUS IN ADVANCE WITH A NICE GLASS OF CHAMPAGNE. I PLAN THIS AROUND A SMALL SHOPPING AREA EG JERMYN STREET, OR PAVILION RD CHELSEA (SEE LAST WEEKS BLOG) SO NOT MUCH WALKING INVOLVED. I START EARLY !! I AM NOT A FAN OF THE COMMERCIALITY OF CHRISTMAS BUT PRESENT GIVING IS AN IMPORTANT CARING RITUAL IT IS NOT ABOUT THE EXPENSE BUT A PERSONAL GIFT THAT SHOWS YOU KNOW AND CARE ENOUGH IS IMPORTANT. I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE JUST GIVE MONEY, AND IF THEY DONT KNOW WHAT TO BUY YOU , THEN THEY DONT KNOW YOU. IF YOU CANT AFFORD MUCH AT LEAST AFFORD THE TIME ! EVEN A £5 GIFT CAN BE INCREDIBLY TOUCHING IF THE GIVER TOOK THE TIME TO SELECT IT. SO MAKE A LIST,CHECKING IT TWICE, SET YOUR BUDGET AND PLAN YOUR ROUTE.
  • I DONT SEND CARDS AND ASK PEOPLE NOT TO SEND THEM. IT SEEMS SO WASTEFUL AS I AM SO ANTI CLUTTER THESE BEAUTIFUL CARDS ARE ALL BINNED THE FOLLOWING WEEK. SO THE STRESS OF WRITING HUNDREDS OF CARDS AND FINDING ADDRESSES IS REMOVED. ALL THE PEOPLE I CARE ABOUT I AM IN TOUCH WITH ON A REGULAR BASIS ANYWAY NO NEED TO SEND ME A CARD !
  • DONT FORGET TO HAVE FUN !! CHRISTMAS FOR ME IS SPECIAL WHEN MEETING UP WITH FRIENDS FOR LUNCHES OR COCKTAILS. I TAKE ALL MY ELDERLY FRIENDS OUT FOR A SPECIAL LUNCH AND INCLUDING ANYONE WHO MAYBE LONELY. IT IS AN IMPORTANT PUNCTUATION MARK IN THE CALENDAR TO TELL PEOPLE HOW SPECIAL THEY ARE.

  • CHRISTMAS EVE WE ALWAYS GO TO CHURCH FOR A SERVICE TO REMEMBER THE TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS .
  • WE ATTEND TWO CHARITY CHRISTMAS CONCERTS EACH YEAR. ONE AT WELLINGTON COLLEGE AND ONE AT ST PAULS KNIGHTSBRIDGE. I LOVE CAROLS AND THESE ARE TRULY MAGICAL. THE CHARITIES BENEFIT ENORMOUSLY AT THIS TIME OF YEAR.
  • IT IS IMPORTANT TO GIVE YOUR TIME TO CHARITY AT CHRISTMAS. WE WRAP AND DONATE TOYS FOR LOCAL CHILDRENS HOMES AND GIVE CHRISTMAS SANDWICHES TO ANYONE WHO WE SEE ON THE STREETS. LAST YEAR WE DONATED HATS AND GLOVES TO THE HOMELESS OF LONDON. CHOOSE YOUR OWN LOCAL CHARITY, THERE WILL BE SOMEONE WHO NEEDS YOU THIS CHRISTMAS.
  • THE CHRISTMAS LUNCH ON THE DAY ITSELF NEED NOT BE A STRESSFUL ENDURANCE RACE. THE SHOWPIECE IS THE TURKEY. NO NEED TO SPEND HOURS PEELING AND PREPARING THE VEG . NO ROAST POTATOES TASTE AS GOOD AS AUNT BESSIES GOOSE FAT OVEN READY POTATOES. THERE IS SOME AMAZING PREPARED VEG NOW TOO . BRUSSELS WITH PANCETTA AND CHESTNUTS. CARROTS WITH CRANBERRIES. JUST POP IN THEIR TRAYS IN THE OVEN CUTS THE TIME AND THE COST TOO WHEN YOU ADD ALL THE SPECIAL BITS TO YOUR VEG. BELIEVE ME YOUR GUESTS WONT KNOW THE DIFFERENCE AND EVEN IF THEY DO THEY WONT MIND. DONT TORTURE YOURSELF COOKING THE MEAL AND PRESENT IT BEAUTIFULLY. THE TURKEY IS LOW MAINTENANCE ONCE IN THE OVEN SO GRAB A GLASS OF BUCKS FIXX AND JOIN IN THE FUN !

THESE ARE JUST A FEW OF MY RITUALS. RITUALS MEAN YOU PRACTISE THEM EVERY YEAR SO THEY BECOME SECOND NATURE. THEY SHOULD ALL BE BEAUTIFUL AND FUN. SO BRING THE BEAUTY AND JOY BACK INTO YOUR CHRISTMAS ROUTINE. THESE RITUALS MAY COME TOO LATE FOR MANY OF YOU BUT THERE IS ALWAYS NEXT YEAR !!

THE QUITED COAT

Back for another season. I love the longer line of this one from SUPERDRY. Nice and warm for walking the dogs, those chilly mornings watching the children play sport, bonfire night etc. Head to stores aimed at teenagers for more value. This coat is superb value at £154.99.

Many of you have requested some style articles for men. Many of my clients are men so let’s start with shorts. One of the most difficult things to get right……. men in shorts. Indeed Tom Ford himself said”shorts should only be worn on the tennis court or on the beach” BUT that was in 2011 and today they are at the forefront of mens fashion. Many men carry off the ‘shorts style’ with great aplomb but there are still many disasters out there in the city sidewalks. So lets keep it hot in the city !!

So lets take a closer look how and when we should wear these bad boys……

OCCASION

Firstly let us consider where we are going to wear them, yes Mr Ford we are kind of listening. Of course shorts are acceptable in a sports environment and on the beach (the current trend is shorter the better) but we are talking about updating your everyday wardrobe. In a formal office situation then shorts are still unacceptable. Also not good at an evening event. Unless of course you are Pharell Williams. But during the day , for days out, at lunch, at the pub, shopping meeting your blood brothers all good. so to sum uo when temperature, environment and location call for it.

CUT

The trend is for tailored slim shorts that follow the line of the leg and are flat fronted.. But you have to take into consideration your body type. If you are a muscular mesomorph than obviously you don’t want it too tight around bulky thighs so you may want a little bit more room here. Also endomorphs with a more rounded tummy may opt for a single or double pleated front to flatter the area. No baggy/excess fabric and no cargo pockets they will add bulk—– this applies to every body shape when it comes to shorts. Just not a good look. So try to stay with a tailored straight short .

SHOP THE SHORTS

LENGTH

The length should fall 1 or 2 inches above the knee. If you have skinny legs a turn up can add a bit of bulk . Men under 25 can wear the fashionable trend for even shorter shorts. But mature adult males please stick to the just above the knee rule !

COLOUR

Stick to the muted/classic colours. The same colouring rules applies to men as well as women (please see my earlier blog on assessing your colour season).So tan/cream for Autumns/Spring, Navy for winters/Summers and even pastels can look great on Summers. But stick to one basic anchor colour. Save the florals and bright prints for the beach. Checks and stripes can look good on dramatic personality types but can be trickier to match so unless you are shopping with your stylist lets keep it foolproof. Solid colours are traditional and therefore more stylish.

SHOP THE LOOK PASTELS

MATERIALS

Keep it breathable in cotton or linen……natural fabrics. Linen has a tendency to crease and normally I hate that crumpled look but it works in a short.

WHAT TO WEAR IT WITH

No baggy t shirts try to keep the top as neat as slim as the bottoms. Polo shirts are a good look if you are going somewhere more casual. The best look is a fitted button through shirt with a collar. if long sleeved roll the sleeves up or a fitted short sleeve can look good too. The big question to tuck or to untuck ? Keep it untucked. . But bear in mind your height if you are taller you will want a longer fitting shirt and certainly if you are short ensure your shirt length is shorter in the body.

FOOTWEAR

NO SOCKS. Loafers or deck shoes worn with invisible/ballet socks so your feet do not sweat and smell. Save the flip flops and sliders for the beach and NO sandals whatever age you are. Yes I am talking to you !!!

TIS THE SEASON………

It is the most wonderful time of the year. the chance to (finally) bring the glamour on with endless rounds of social events. Even dinner a deux requires a little more effort at this time of the year. Then when you are not partying there are some serious country looks going on too. Great or the school run, long wintry walks in the Country or weekends away partaking in country pursuits.

Both looks are of course combined if you are lucky enough to be invited to a country house party at this time of the year.

GLAMOUR EDIT

So let us view my picks for an injection (yes another booster !!) of glamour whether you are on an endless social spree or just staying at home. Lets go glam !

From the little black dress to jewel colours. Tops such as sequinned bolero or a vava voom tee to jazz up an existing outfit. Beautiful earring as real glamour is about attention to every detail and if you are staying in it just HAS to be maribou/ feather trimmed pjs……….doesn’t it ? Surely ?

COUNTRY CASUAL EDIT

Although there is nothing casual about this look. It is super stylish and thought through but not give the impression that you have tried tooo hard. The “no make up make up look” but in the world of fashion.

Country casuals have to be practical and comfortable. Muted colours keep it classy for the winter months. So we have some practical footwear and of course trousers must be warm and skinny to tuck into long boots. Nothing worse than damp trouser bottoms flapping around your ankles. Super stylish outerwear. Tartan and khaki great colours for the country scene. Coats and jackets are your investment pieces for this look and as the country look tends to not be fashion led these pieces will last a lifetime. Don’t forget the accessories , some brightly coloured scarves for your otherwise muted tones and Mulberry for handbags complete your country wardrobe.

Party season is here at last after two years it is time to dress up and paartaay ! I am loving the tuxedo look , which takes the dilemma out of Black Tie dress code invitations when anything seems to go these days. I wore a Givenchy tux just last week to a very nice event at Mosimanns in Belgravia.

So we start our edit with some tux inspired pieces either as a jumpsuit , suit or dress these will get you through any party occasion and any blurred dress codes. If you are planning short and sparkly the Aidan Mattox dress is perfect if you want to cover your arms If you are all out va va voom then Nasty Gal have some very flattering great value party dress. Three eye catching longer length dresses follow. Red will always make you stand out in a room if you want to catch someones eye but the jewel tones from Karen Millen are oh so Christmassy and already discounted ! We finish with some stand out long evening dresses for those extra special events because these are blow your mind (and everyone else in the room) dresses.

Be bang on trend with a shacket this Autumn. An outerwear essential. .A cross between a shirt and a Jacket. A slightly thicker fabric than a normal shirt but be careful not to bulk up too much on the fabric. It is all about the layering. The most popular trend will be a checked pattern although their are many plain ones to choose from either go for Winter pastels or Autumnal shades of olive taupe and cream . depending on your colouring i.e cool or warm (please see my past blog on How to work out your Colouring).

The shacket is less structured than a jacket , stylishly casual but with collar and cuffs. Worn loose and open over a simple vest or a thin sweater. Should be oversized, so you maybe able to steal your mans shacket. !! Can be paired with jeans, loungewear, legging or even a dress. Fabulous over a knitted dress.

This staple in your wardrobe can become an all year round essential.

So no need to be scared of the shacket. it can seem like a styling nightmare but as you can see it is really simple. Experiment with items you have in your closet to get the best look for you and your new shacket(s).

So let us take a look at some of my favourite shackets on the market. There are pastels, checks , pastel checks together, plain, long, short and even a couple for your man to buy so of course you can then borrow them. (sneaky girls).
